Another boy racer/loud exhaust rant..

We had the same boy-racer problem here a year or so back. People were getting really pissed off about it so it was brought up at a resident meeting. A local cllr. met with a group of youths and they came to an agreement that they could hold legal 'cruises' in a car park in the village twice a month. Since that, the problem isn't near as bad.

Don't know how something like that would work in Dublin though

One thing i never understood about boy racers is the cars they drive, Loud noticeable cars. The kinda cars that will be singled out by the law.

If anybody wants to know properly how to race, put a taxi plate on your car about 2.30 on a saturday night, make your way towards town.

This sorts the men from the boys.

Usually the thing with these boy racers is that they have sh*te cars done up. The fact many of them cant drive correctly is another matter. I was on a tight road a few days ago this galanza took the p&&s when I went to overtake him when the road widened out he put the foot down. Really annoying then back to bendy corners at 80km/hr

Places like Kilarney and Sligo when rallies are on can be quite annoying. I cant see the point in driving up and down town all day.

If you live in Dublin (and I have), you will get drunken ars*holes singing and shouting at the top of their voices at 3-4 am, cars racing, sirens, buses with ear splitting exhausts (louder than ANY boyracer), alarms, traffic, etc...
If you're expecting peace and quiet you're in the wrong place.
You can get windows that filter out 90% of the noise, in Germany we lived 2 meter beside a main road with 40 ton artic lorries thundering past, you couldn't hear yourself scream in the house.
After fitting the windows, the only way you'd know a truck is driving past was by the vibration ;-)
Or move to the country, the only noise I have to put up with is sheep and cows.
Bliss!
But getting upset at the noise will only achieve one thing: an early grave!

Friend of mine whose 21 is driving a Golf MkI and a '99 BMW 3 series. The Golf is done up with the loud exhaust, tinted windows etc. and the BMW could be called "done up" too but minus a loud exhaust. He'd be in the boy racer category, and he can afford the a BMW. Banning certain cars is clearly not a solution; it'd put so many people off the road (regardless of the boy racers).

Also "Civics,Glanzas (Starlet),Lancers,Colts" are all decent, reliable cars. Some of them look pretty decent when they're all kitted out IMO. I do hate the loud exhausts though.

Or you could drop 20k on a Hayabusa with a turbocharger and modified gearing producing 500bhp on a 120 kilo frame and put them to shame.

Ive covered nearly every national primary and seconadary route in the country. You would be struggling to get it anywhere near 3rd or 4th even on the Naas Road.

It might be different everywhere else but in Galway the boy racers tend to drive around all night going around and around the same route. Its crap for those of us unfortunate enough to live on that route. Loud exhausts should be banned and then we'll all be happy. The boy racers can still have their toy cars and drive them pointlessly around the town all night and the rest of us can sleep peacefully

Modified cars aren't that bad IMO, it's just the exhaust that ****s the car up.

Cars can look well if they're done up properly, but if they have an exhaust the size of a tin of paint, then I hate them.

Unless the car was built with the sole purpose of having a loud exhaust (ie: Aston V8)

I lived in Galway for 8 months and used to drive that route everynight from 11-12 because that's when the cops were escorting the large trucks to the mines. It used to be great craic and it goes past all the major clubs and pubs so was a pretty good route for finding the ladies iirc.

Nice to know it's still going on 5+ years later.

More importantly, Who are you trying to impress? I drive a nice car (that I've also worked hard for) but TBH I'don't really have the money or need to impress people by driving a skyline or what you have round the roads TBH. So in fairness roll the head back in please.

I find it funny when sometimes your overtaking a corolla or civic type car and the loud exhaust gives away the fact that they are changing down and speeding up as you drive along side them. To me loud exhausts make it sound as if the engine is trying hard to keep up. I am more impressed by the fact my diesel can give plenty of power without resorting to excessive revs and noise, gives the impression your not trying too hard.
In saying that I do like the noise coming from actual powerful cars.

Ditto for all the homemade road traps. A reasonable person would be expected to know that those actions would be likely to cause an accident and likely death. Possible to argue a murder case in this situation if the boy racer is killed.

I believe the guards in Donegal started seizing modified cars but stopped after the howls of complaints from parents, saying their little Dylans couldn;t get to work /ex-cetera

Talk to whoever and get speed humps put in. In the meantime, find out where they live and pour concrete or tar down those exhaust pipes..

OK, everyone relax now!
There will be no spikes, no traps, no cheesewire, no homemade explosives, no assault with airrifles or any such shenanigans.
Just tarring everyone who drives a sporty car with the same brush won't help the issue.
The cars don't have a brain, they don't drive themselves around.
It takes a person behind the wheel to do that.
Simply banning a type of car will mean they'll turn up at your house with a different car.
If they where given Fiestas they'd find a way of making them loud (drill a hole just after the manifold).
What business is it of anyone what car people buy? It's a matter of personal taste. besides I have an issue with people who drive Corollas.
It shouts out to the world "I HAVE NO IMAGINATION, TASTE OR INDIVIDUALITY WHATSOEVER!"
But they are free to do so, even Nissan Micras (who should all be put in a pile and torched along with their octogenarian, 30 km/h driving owners)
For 99% Ireland has the meekest, slowest drivers I've ever seen (and the worst at reading the road ahead), that should be the problem being tackled.
But if a few d*ckheads burn up your neighborhood every night it just means one thing: The cops are not stopping them.
Why? That is the important question here.

I'm not trying to impress anyone. I wanted a Skyline since I was 11 or 12 years of age, so I saved up and bought the car two years ago.

It's nice to see boards.ie is full of mature people. In fairness, what is that going to solve? Nothing. You'll just piss them off. Speed bumps won't solve anything either to be honest. They put ramps down in my estate last year. Since then, it's just encouraged the 'boy racers' to slow right down for a ramp, then fly down to the next ramp in first gear. Thus creating more noise.

If a car is monitored for the amount of air pollution it produces, then it should also be monitored for the amount of noise pollution.

I have no issue with Skylines and the like, people are entitled to their own preferences with regards to cars but if the exhaust creates a noise akin to dying elephant with tonsilitis then it shouldn't be allowed. Simple as.

I'm no car expert, but isn't there a way for these modified cars to retain there engine power etc etc without the bloody ridiculous and horrible noise they produce? Afterall, there are plently of purpose built high powered sports cars that don't produce the same noise.

Although I'm sure if there was a law against the noise these cars produce the ownership of said cars would drop dramatically. Afterall, it seems to me that with most of these cars/owners it is about how powerful the car appears to be, and not how powerful it actually is in reality.

As far as I know, there might be a law coming in with restrictions on dB. Supposedly it will be tested in the NCT too.

Personally, excessively noisy exhausts drive me insane. I live close to the M50, so I can hear cars racing up and down every night. The worst is the screaming VTEC sound.:rolleyes:

My own car is very quiet at idle and low rpm. It's only once you put the foot down that it's in any way loud, and at that, it's not very loud at all. I have an aftermarket exhaust on my car, but it has twin silencers

We had a muppet in our estate years ago that would constantly be out revving his car outside his house. He had a Civic "type r"....well he had put stickers to that effect on but the big drum brakes gave it away....with a stupid loud exhaust. If he was to reverse out of his driveway it would involve loads of revving and revving.....the guy was a tool. After numerous complaints from the neighbours my mate bought a can of that No More Big Gaps filler and emptied it into the exhaust.....worked a treat...no more stupid exhaust!

You do know a lot of exhausts(stock) are designed to have a certain noise?
(as in fairly loud for a lot of them)

I’m sure most of ye know how EU Directives are transposed into Irish Law. When an EU Directive is made they are put into Irish law by means of a Statutory Instrument (S.I)

So the Original Council Directive that dealt with this sound testing is: DIRECTIVE 70/157/EEC

This then was ignored by most countries and became more comprehensive in 2007 by the last amendment: 2007/34/EC.

So what does this mean to the Modifiers like us?: Basically they have put a stamp on the Maximum Noise Level in decibels.

The table here shows:

with an engine power of less than 150 kW | 78dB |

Vehicles intended for the carriage of passengers and equipped with more than nine seats, including the driver's seat; vehicles intended for the carriage of goods:
with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 2 tonnes | 76dB |

However
- the limit values are increased by 1 dB(A) if they are equipped with a direct injection diesel engine,
- for vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of over two tonnes designed for off-road use, the limit values are increased by 1 dB(A) if their engine power is less than 150 kW and 2 dB(A) if their engine power is 150 kW or more,
- for vehicles in category 2.1.1, equipped with a manually operated gear box having more than four forward gears and with an engine developing a maximum power exceeding 140 kW/t and whose maximum power/maximum mass ratio exceeds 75 kW/t, the limit values are increased by 1 dB(A) if the speed at which the rear of the vehicle passes the line BB' in third gear is greater than 61 km/h.

For example
Toyota chaser 1JZ-GTE engine produces an output of 210kW allowing you a db level of 80dB
A Toyota Chaser/Supra engine of 2JZ-GTE engine produces an output of 206kW allowing you a db level of 80dB
A Glanza V which has the 4E-FTE with an engine output of 97kW so your level would be 74dB
Honda’s B16a Engine has an output of between 110kW and 130kw (depending on number) so your level would be 74dB
Hondas B18c Engine (Type R) has an output of 150kW so your allowance would be 80dB

If your Lucky to be flying around in a K20 Conversion the K20 Engine puts out roughly 165kW so your over the 150kW limit so your allowance is 80dB

If your beating around in a Twin Cam Toyotas 4A-GE (16-valve) produces 96–103 kW so your level is 74db. If it has the 24Valve Black top then that produces 121kW so that’s still 74dB

If your Driving a Pulsar VZR N1 the engine has an output of 147kW so your just under the 150kW limit and your allowance is 74db

Other than that you could have 200 gallons of hooch in your trunk, an engine from a fighter jet, your car on fire, driving backwards with your arse out the window.
Unless you went 1 km/h over the speed limit on the dual carriageway, they'll have you in a split second!

There are a lot of these crappy 92 fords with incredibly loud engines near where I keep my horse. (donadea, meath)

Once a group of young lads sped past, bloody noise of the car, and was way too close to my horse and zig zagging accross the road in order to try to annoy me. horse, who was narky at the time, gives a swift kick to the side of the car. There was a massive hoof sized dent.

They tried to take me to court over damages, the horse really hurt her pastern (ankle), guess who won? haha! Boy races 0 - Hasna (my horse) 1. Didn't even need to go to court, lawyer said that they would loose within minutes.

even now the little bollixes stop to apologise to me whenever they see me, finally copped on that messing with loud noises and large animals with iron on their feet is a bad thing.

I wait for my next run in haha!
