Hey, so i've been cycling a lot during the summer and would like to continue while in college... College is like 12KM away or so, and I find it quite annoying having big heavy bag on my back the whole way...

I've seen people with these bags that hang on the back of bikes, what are these called? I think they're pannier bags, am i correct? Are these any good? I have a regular bog standard type mountain bike thing, would they work?

Also, where would i buy them? Any bike shop?? (Sorry for the noob like questions)

Yep, those are panniers or pannier bags. They're great if you need to carry heavy-ish loads regularly or you just don't want to carry anything on your back. There are lots of different manufacturers. Personally, I like Ortlieb. Their panniers aren't cheap but they're very weather-proof and very easy to put on/remove. You can buy Ortliebs in Cycleways in Dublin. Check out their website for pricing (www.cycleways.com).

As with all panniers, you'll need a rack to mount them. If your frame has braze-ons (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html#brazeon), you shouldn't have any problem installing the rack.

If you've a MTB (no braze-ons) you might need something like the Topeak MTX rack if you want to fit panniers (see http://www.rei.com/product/697096), which just clamps onto the seat post.

The link has a ')' in it, so not working... Thanks though, I must call into a bike shop on way home & see what they say...
