Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Would search the forum only the blasted Search functionality on this site leaves so much to be desired...

Anyway, had my 360 and HD-DVD add-on hooked up to a surround sound system over the weekend, with the audio being sent via the toslink cable on the 360's HD VGA cable to the amp - no matter what I chose on the 360's menu, the amp wouldn't say its getting anything other than Dolby Pro Logic from the 360 - is this because the 360 can actually only output Dolby Pro Logic or that the amp couldn't handle HD-DVD audio?

I've got Dolby Digital outputted from mine, have you changed it to Digital on the system blade?

The Xbox will output whatever is on the disc. Its up to what exactly your receiver/amp can decode. What make/model is it?

Its a premium, bought around xmas last year and the hd-dvd add-on bought a month ago, and I was playing a couple of HD-DVDs (King Kong, Hulk, Batman Begins) - the 360 was set to output dolby digital 5.1 in the system blade

Sorry, I meant what make and model is the receiver/amp?

Well if it is that one you should have dolby digital. Do you get dolby digital when playing games on the xbox?

Also it might be worth checking in the setup menu of the xbox that digital sound is definitely turned on. Pro Logic sounds like analog sound is turned on.

My mate gets dolby digital when he plays dvds through his own dvd player, so no problems there - it was only when we had the hd-dvd add-on hooked up that we came across this pro logic problem - the toslink cable was going directly from the 360's av cable to the back of the amp...

Pro logic is essentially a mixed stereo signal , left and right channels are summed and the result fed to the rears , the bass for the sub woofer is filtered off the stereo signal.

Dolby digital has discreet channels for every speaker , however Dolby digital can mean stereo , 5.1 , 6.1 , or 7.1 , it depends on how the disc content was made , output can be set to dolby digital and still only feed a stereo signal out , check the disk and make sure it actually has 5 channels encoded on it.

The back of the case should have a little square with smaller squares indicating what speakers will be used.

Most av recievers set to 5.1 will default to pro logic on receiving a stereo signal so this is in all likelihood what is happening.

EDIT : Well whaddya know , this is a known issue with the xbox 360 HD DVD drive , known as the 2 channel problem , good news , there is an update , you need to be logged on to xbox live , put in a HD DVD to play , and you will be prompted to update , some details here ,

Thats true but the discs he was trying to watch would have at least a 5.1 or 6.1 soundtrack on them. I have King King and Batman Begins on normal DVD myself and both have 5.1 so it stands to reason that the HD versions would have similar.

Since the receiver/amp has output DD from a DVD player he has tried it the only thing left to check really is the 360 audio settings.

    Curiouser and curiouser...

Looks like there's a separate settings area that you access when playing a HD-DVD, and you chose the output there instead...

Interesting and good to know. At least you are sorted now. :D

right, can confirm that the above solution is correct and works - a load of pish tho, coz you have to use your xbox controller to access this other settings menu, you can't get it with the remote... at least its all there anyway
