Despite what ye say, I still saved myself €100 by flying Ryanair instead of Aer Lingus - albeit, I'm only going to Berlin for the weekend, and have no bag or extra stuff to be charged for, but money is money
Don't think anyone is denying they'll be cheaper in most instances. But while "money is money", it isn't everything

Got charged €150 for baggage and credit card fees for 6 people to Malaga tonight. Aer Lingus wouldn't have been much more expensive but the flight times with Ryanair were perfect.

yeah its bad and getting worse  but i did book two return flights to malta for about €80 last week :D

i do remember the dark days though circa 1995 when travel agents expected you to pay IR£200+ for a flight from Dublin to London  I ended up getting the eurolines

done that my self once, the way the prices are going, could start to see the appeal of eurolines again if it wasn't for the 18hr journey from the NW of ireland, as for using ryanair, haven't used it when travling on my own for years

It is €3 per leg for credit card payment but €1 for debit card payment so you could have saved €24

    they dont accept laser/mastro cards

Dont forget to add on the price of your onward journey - places miles away from the airport on the other side = more money to front up.

I just did the maths there and ryanair and aer lingus are working out about even, im taking the latter option.

Does anyone see anything like discrimination here? I flew with Ryanair many times and even though I had a few grudges, discrimination was not among them. After this "innovation", I have no other words to express it. Basically, it's either an EU passport or a surcharge. You may see it differently because most of you have such a pass, but I can't really describe this situation in any other way. And I'm sure other non-EU folks using this airline on a regular basis see it similarly. That was the reason I didn't proceed to finalise another flight with them a couple of days ago and I think their fill factor will suffer more consequences of this. But I'm curious if any of you here thought of it this way? Cheers:)

ME TOO!!!! I am SO annoyed with this discrimination. So I don't hold an EU passport, and I have to pay extra in visa fees for every country I need to visit, AND then this silly check-in charge. Have you considered just blatantly lying, ticking the little box next to: I do hold an EU/EEA passport? Do you think anyone checks it?

Yes, I was thinking of it too but not really going to try it myself. I prefer to be law obeying even when the law is crap. It's not quite a law but rather a Ryanair's whim but still circumventing it would not be right. I asked consumer protection agencies about it but they keep hush so far. My opinion is discrimination issues are not taken seriously here.

Yes, just returned from "so called Oslo". A return trip from the airport to the real Oslo takes about 2 hours and costs ~ EUR 35 per head. It's the same with "almost Paris" or "nearly Stockholm" or many other Ryanair destinations.

Someone posted here before about having an American passport, and not being allowed on the plane when going through the gate... So I wouldn't chance it!

Yeah they are a joke. London Stansted is a £25 return journey on the train into Liverpool St in Central London. Thats €35!!! Takes 50 mins one way.

Same price as train from gatwick and cheaper than heathrow. Only 10 minutes in the difference

You can try bussing it from as little as £2 each way.

Ryanair have plenty of airports that are miles and miles away from the main airport but London isn't one of them. In Rome their airport is closer to the city than the main airport.

I believe the German airports are the worst for Ryanair distance from "named" cities.

You can take the tube to Heathrow though.... Bus from Stansted would be a disaster. At least with the train you know exactly how long it will take. With roads, there could be any number of delays...

Frankfurt-Hahn is 125 kilometers from Frankfurt (am Main).... Ridiculous!

isn't their idea of 'Bratislava' not even in the same country???

Takes about 1.5hours to get from ryanair's 'Paris' to the city center and the journey costs about €25 return.

    Just to clarify.

This applies to flights booked from today. Flights booked before today with airport check-in are not subject to an extra check-in charge.

Anyone have anything to back this up? I'm traveling tomorrow on a flight booked on 7-9-07 so this charge should not apply but I am expecting them to look for it. Can't find anything on their website about flights booked before 20th Sept not being subject to an extra check-in charge? Not too bothered but I assume if they refuse I'll have to re queue at the ticket desk to pay the fee and I'll be tight for time.

Sort of? Problem is although its now a free service when I booked the flight I unselected web checkin as there was a charge attached and it was free to checkin at the airport. Now its the exact opposite and I can't use the web checkin and must use the airport checkin. I'll see how it goes but I'm anticipating a bit of hassle but maybe I'm being pessimistic.

They should have note on your booking that you were entitled to free airport check in :)

Finally they give up and lift it:
    http://www.ryanair.com/site/IE/news.php?yr=09&month=mar&story=gen-en-100309
Phase 1: From 19th March 2009, Ryanair’s web check-in service will be extended to (a) non EU/EEA citizens, (b) passengers travelling with checked baggage and (c) reduced mobility customers.
