I put a link to a free poll at he end of my messages and i was banned and accussed of spamming. I also put three of the same threads in three different sections becuase thye belonged in each of thos sections legal, human and political. I dont know which it was but getting banned for ever is too much. I cant be bothered signing in with a new name every time i get banned.

No coaching from the moderator. I checked the rules and regulations that i signed on joining and i havent broken them. If you want to contact me you have my email but moderators should not go banning people because they think they think are improving the board.ie by calling people spammers just because they have cosmetic issues with the threads. If you want a tidy forum just ask! I'm going to have to tell my brother about this and he will be very angry with someone. There is going to be  hard questions.

Is that meant to be some sort of a threat?   Me, him OUTSIDE NOW!

If you had any common sense, you would have sent a message to the forum moderators where you posted your poll and asked them kindly if you could post it. Posting nonsense across multiple forums is spam, so you are a spammer. Welcome to the internet.

Except there were about 30 of them.

Perhaps I was a little harsh by hard deleting most of the posts, but let's be honest here; You spent your time picking out a bunch of random threads, sticking in a four or five line reply, and then "Please reply to my poll" at the bottom.

    It was spam.

Surely there's a book called "The Internet for Dummies", somewhere. There must be.

    Edit: Found it.

I left my replies to legal political and humanities and photography and other areas of interest. The replies were appropiate some of which were compotent on the subject and highly relevant and others intellectually stimulated the online chat. No one reply was even vaguely similar each one was authentic and was not spam in that sense.

There was nothing in your rules that said you cant have a signature link with the chat meassages you leave. If there is a specific rule about signatures
I doubt i breached that rule.

Anyway unless there is a rule I broke that you might post here then you acted on the possibilities that my link was spam. The messages were not spam and the link obviously is not spam otherwise all and any link would be spam. Therefore show me the rule or accept my messages were not spam.

Thanks folks at boards.ie for your time and patience.

copy of wikipedia definition of spam.

    Definitions
Spam has several definitions, the most often cited definition being unsolicited commercial email (UCE). However spam as several definitions, varying by the source. Once such definition is any email message that is pornographic or lewd, others include fraudulent emails. Another definition being any email message where the sender’s identity is spoofed, such as messages sent though unprotected SMTP servers, ect. The definition of UCE is the one most people think of when they think of spam and many hard line anti-spam activists use this generic definition. [16]

No! my brother is a expert on stuff like this :D and he knows people and is good at getting delicate mattters like this resolved in a civilised way and yes he is passionate and yes this would make anybody angry because it's a basic right to speak.
if the messages were inapropiate but if it was a case you or seamus felt you had to tidy up my messages fair enough but dont waste yout time just pm me and ask me to to make those ever so tiny changes. That makes business sense and saves you time and allows you to improve your board and users to improve their usage skills. :(

I appreciate you took time to listen to me but my pirelli had no come back and it is my proper user name.

You are trying to get out of your thirty posts being spam by technicalities. A typical response of someone that knows they are in the wrong. You know fine well that you wanted to get as much coverage for your poll as possible, you specifically created those posts to get coverage, and now you are trying to wrangle your way out of it. Now you are saying that the rules do not specifically apply to what you did? It is clear to the Smod that banned you (seamus) that you broke the rules and spammed boards. It is clear to everyone else, bar you, that has posted here that he is correct and you spammed countless times. All of the people that have posted on this thread, bar you, can siteban you for spam/being a twit/having an annoying username/and other general ambiguous reasons that will benefit or not bring on drawbacks to this community. You have to accept this.

This is not a delicate matter at all. It's very simple and can be summed up in a tiny poem I just made:
    You spammed
    You banned

    It's as simple as that.

You don't understand how spam works. Someone spams and their spam links get spewed onto the site scattered in every nook and cranny. If we don't clean up the spam as soon as possible then we will get reported posts every ten minutes, hence if we are to take your advice we have to post on the spam thread/post that "we are dealing with this post, but please just wait until we have contacted Mr. Spammer as we have asked him to delete his message kindly because we don't like having 30 links spammed on our site.

Also if we do that then we have no idea when you will log on next. In the hour, tomorrow, next year? You aren't thinking this through properly.
I appreciate you took time to listen to me but my pirelli had no come back and it is my proper user name.
    Oh dry your eyes.

    You Spammed
    You Banned.

If you ask seamus nicely then he may not ban your current account, or he may unban your previous account and then ban this one. Or he may ban both accounts, who knows with our seamus. :) If it were up to me I would let you post freely with your current nick for a month or so until you have proved your non-spammyness and gotten some funny looks from people due to the username. After you have proved to us that you deserve a shot on this privately owned website (where you do not have free speech, and your basic right to speak is a privilege that the owners of boards.ie gives you) I would ban this current account and unban pirelli which is your usual username.

    But that's just me.

Oh and look here for a definition of spam, it is more pertinant a link to the definition of what you did, if you want to go all wikipedia on us.
    Wikipedia wrote:
Most spambot forum spam consists of links, with the dual goals of increasing search engine visibility in highly competitive areas such as weight loss, pharmaceuticals, gambling, pornography, real estate or loans, and generating more traffic for these commercial websites. Some of these links contain code to track the spambot's identity if a sale goes through, when the spammer behind the spambot works on commission.

Spam posts may contain anything from a single link, to dozens of links. Text content is minimal, usually innocuous and unrelated to the forum's topic. Full banner advertisements have also been reported.

Alternately, the spam links are posted in the user's signature, in which case the spambot will never post. The link sits quietly in the signature field, where it is most likely to be harvested by search engine spiders than discovered by forum administrators and moderators.
Spam prevention and deletions measurably increase the workload of forum administrators and moderators. The amount of time and resources spent keeping a forum spam free contributes significantly to labour cost, and the skill required in the running of a public forum. Marginally profitable or smaller forums may be permanently closed by administrators. Forums that do not require registration are becoming rare.

Spambots are automated and they are used as the text above states for weight loss, pharmaceuticals, gambling, pornography, real estate or loans, and generating more traffic for these commercial websites but there is a spammer that gets paid and there is a code in the link and spider's and it all complicated stuff.

To put it simply I am not taking the heat for the real spammer's that you obviously are at war with.

    I am a neutral and honest cybernaut.:D

And thanks for the free education in cyber space spamming.

You are welcome for the education. Just make sure that you won't spam again, be sure to tell us that you won't spam again, and all will be well. It makes business sense for you, saves you time, and allows you to improve your board usage skills :). Then you can take the hat off and step away from the dark corner of the classroom and onto your chair like everyone else.

Good luck with your new future :)

The future is bright the future is spam free,
Would it be possible to get my old user name pirelli back.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 35,524 ✭✭✭✭Gordon

That depends on whether or not you will spam again in my opinion, but I don't want to step on seamus' toes so it's his call.

I love a nice entertaining thread.

This is obviously an issue of understanding. You failed to understand the ettiquete here. I know when you're used to posting on other forums or on USENET, you think, "Ah sure I'm an old pro at this", and you continue posting as you did there. Then you get banned and because you think you're right you think the board is wrong.

You made a mistake and failed in some fundamental understanding of how this forum works. I was a little harsh by completely wiping all your posts, but then you caught me at the wrong end of a bad Friday morning.

What you posted constituted spam. This is because boards.ie (and most other forums) provide a means whereby you can specify your signature. This is the little piece of text below your post (like you see on Gordon's posts). This is automated.
The benefit of this functionality is threefold:
    1. You don't have to paste a signature every time you make a post
    2. Other users have the option to choose to not see your signature
    3. There is a clear separation between what is your signature and what is your contribution to the thread.

The way that you inserted your "signature" made it appear to other users that it was part of your posts, and therefore was relevant to the topics being discussed. It wasn't.
You also denied users the right to not see your signature.

When someone posts something in multiple threads that it not relevant to those threads, that is spam. I don't care what dictionary.com or what wikipedia have to say on the subject. So taking my explanation above, your "signature" constituted spam.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you just didn't understand.

    I'll let you post your agreement that you;
    1. Actually do now understand
    2. That you will refrain from spamming like that again.
    3. That if you do choose to use the signature function, you will abide by the signature rules: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=60479

Once you have agreed to this, I will ban the new account and lift the ban on the pirelli account. If you have any queries or concerns thereafter, feel free to PM me. I will however be keeping an eye out, so if you come up above the radar I won't be as likely to give you the benefit of the doubt again.

I read the link about signatures and I agree with it.

    Thanks .

You can go ahead and delete this account and I will use my old login account name pirelli.

    Thanks
