Probably a stupid question but is my NCT number the one with about 12 digits at the top of the certificate or the one with about 7, that begins with a letter??

That sounds like the registration certificate, I think they all start with a letter whereas the nct numbers are all digits. There is a sample NCT and VRC certificate on the cartell website if you want to be sure to be sure.
On their site (http://www.cartel.ie) bang in your reg and click on the two star button. On the payments page (skip the payment stuff) on the bottom they have boxes to enter in mileage and to verfy certificates. Beside the "Registration Certificate Number" text there is an image that looks like a question mark, click that and it will show you what a reg cert looks like. Theres also one for the NCT too.
