crows thumping bay window

On several mornings in recent days we have been awoken by a hooded
crow who has leaned into the bay window sill and seems to knock against
the window rather loudly. I'm guessing it sees a reflection and maybe this
is some kind of territorial behaviour. We're in a relatively rural area.

Is this normal ? Any way to deter them from doing this ?

I can't be sure if the crow is using its beak or feathers (or claws) to
    make the impact noise.

We had a swallows nest during the summer near the eaves in an
alcove near the front porch area. I haven't checked to see if it is
still there. I know swallows will soon depart. I only add this info in
case it might be relevant ...?

Swallows are well gone - which reminds me that I need to take down our nest.
We also had the crow problem when we moved in. Used to knock on the window of the master bedroom and also on the guttering above it. He work our son who was 6 months at the time quite a bit. Now that you mention it, it always happened early morning when the sun was low in the sky and his reflection would have been most visable as the sun was behind him.
We scared him off a number of times and the problem lessened. He's gone now.

I did hear of a hooded crow who attacked a VW beatle and removed all of the rubber seals, wipers and damaged the paint-work... a shot-gun was considered as a remedy...

Hang a plastic bag near the window ie hanging out of the closed window and the rattle of the bag will scare the bird away.
