    Hi,

I drive a hyundai accent 97 and get about 300 -350 miles per tank of around 35 euro. If I were to upgrade to a diesel what size loan would the amount I'd save on fuel service and what diesel car could I get for that loan.
I want to stay cost neutral within reason.

    Tks,

    TC

I'm afraid you'll have to be specific and give some kind of budget, if your talking about spending €12 - 13K then you should have quite a big choice, whereas somewhere a bit cheaper would leave you with fewer options and higher milage cars.

Looks like your car is worth about €1500 going by carzone... a sound investment might be

if your looking for cheap motoring, you should pick a decent one up far cheaper than that too.

I currently drive one and have done about 12K miles so far trouble free. 50MPG, plenty of power for overtaking etc.

    My 2c anyway.

    What is your annual mileage?

People used buy diesel cars if they were doing alot of driving but these days people buy them too because they like driving a diesel. Most car makers now offer smaller capacity diesel engines which are just as powerful as similar sized petrol engined cars.

A diesel car is more expensive to buy than the same car with a petrol engine however but you will get alot of that money back when you go to sell the diesel car on again. If you have the extra money lying around then you could do alot worse than buying a diesel car.

Tax and insurance are roughly around the same depending on what version you buy. Petrol v diesel forecourt prices vary depending on economic and other factors but a diesel will be more efficent. Servicing a diesel should be no more expensive than a petrol and the service intervals are similar if not the same these days.

So it is alot of swings and roundabouts regarding which one is better. Both have their ups and downs.

I think these sums are correct - sorry that they're not in l/km.

€35 @ €1.10 per litre is about 32 litres. Averaging out your figures, you're getting 325 miles per tank - which works out as 46 mpg or so. That's not bad going. If you're thinking of trading up just for the sake of getting more fuel economy, I don't know if you're going to save a whole lot?

I was getting 330 odd miles for roughly 55euro in my 01 1.2 Astra

I'm now getting 500 odd miles for about 47 euro in my 05 1.7 TDCI Astra

So fuel savings are there to be made.

Ideally I'll be looking towards the 1.3 TDCI Astra when/if I find a low mileage 2nd hand version. Gets better mpg and is cheaper to tax.

You won't get too much in the way of good diesels for that kind of money if keeping the mileage low is of concern.

Some examples of <1.4 DSL and "low" mileage

Have driven all these models except the fiat. I can say that

    - the corsa felt like the nippiest [lighter than rest] but a bit rough.
    - the 307 was comfortable rid but wasnt sure about the build quality
    - the xsara was noisy and very dated [imo] interior
