Going to make this as short as possible, hope I'm in theright area, I think I am, my boyfriend got a guy from a garage to fix up his car privately as the guy in the garage said 'oh dont get them to do it here, it'll cost you too much, I'll do it very cheap etc' I told him not to go that way as it'll only be trouble, basically the guy collected my bfs car on the 16th and as yet he stil hasnt got it back, my bf kept ringing him and he kept putting him off anyway, my boyfriend had to do all the running to collect parts etc for this idiot and he has told him he WANTS his car 2 night no excuses, the guy sent him a text saying have €300 ready or else you're not getting the keys of the car, even though my bf had asked roughly how much it would cost and he said roughly €150 - €200, my bf said theres no way hes giving him 300 when he had the car for almost 2 weeks and he didnt bother getting parts etc, now I'm afraid of a showdown tonight when this guy claims he's bringing the car...A bit of advice please

Tell your BF to have a few mates on standby in the house (if that's where thic mechanic is dropping the car off) or if he is meeting him somewhere else, don't go alone.

Cops will be no good in this instance as the transaction isn't going through a legit company and the mechanic only gave a rough quote which isn't binding.

We've all got stung by w*nkers like that- I had a nearly identical story. My advice is bear the extra 100 bucks and be done with him.

I've been a car nut for donkey's years and fining the right person to look after an ailing car is tough.

Run away and don't look back.

Assuming nothing major happens tonight- ask around for an independant specialist for the make of car your BF drives. The guys here will know someone for sure.

True True.....I have been ripped off by a Main Ford Dealer in the past

Good advice, pay the extra 100 and be rid of the git. If you BF is a bit strong headed and will confront him then he shouldn't be alone coz mechanic will prob have someone with him driving another car to take him home

I agree with others - pay the €100 and be done with it. It's great to get things done privately as a nixer as it can save quite a few bob - but only if you get a recommendation from someone you can trust, or if the nixer merchant is a personal friend.

I'm interested to know how it all turns out for you - best of luck - it's a crappy situation to be in.

For after, your b/f might let the agrage owner know that one of his mechanics is telling customers to come to him privately; it's equivalent to the mechanic stealing off the garage.

Also, if the mechanic works for a dealer, why couldn't he get parts? Are the parts that your b/f bought all used on the car?

In a lot of garages it's 'officially' a sackable offence, but most of the time a blind eye is turned to the whole nixer thing - it's almost a given that any mechanic will be involved in nixers. But to brazenly poach a customer from the forecourt of the garage the mechanic works for...........well that's a bit more serious.

if it's a main dealer, usuallly the only way of getting eduacated is fixing the knackered old yokes that couldn't justify main stealer attention.

Rule#1 is never get your own parts- If they're substandard or wrong- you're knackered. I learned this when I once got a clutch.

thanks for all your advice, well the guy turned up at my bfs house last night with a very rough dude, I'll be polite so that's all I'll say...I told my bf to just give him the money as it'll only cause more problems, yer man with him wouldve beat the crap out him, my bf isnt irish so I was more afraid!!!! Anyway hes paid and done with thank the lord, and he's going to mention it to the garage!!!!!!! THANKSSSSSSSSS

Good - that was probably the best (less painful!) way to deal with it.

Hope the garage take the info on board. If they don't prove helpful, *please* tell us who they are

May not be a good idea to report the guy to his boss, seeing as he and his rough mate know where your friend lives!

    Not your ornery onager
