I have three vhs videos I'd like to get onto dvd or svcd if possible, but the old vcr packed up a while ago and is thrown out so cannot just capture to my dreambox.

Anyone know of a place that will do this for a reasonable charge?

I used to do it for €20 a tape, the going rate is about 10 now and i had a handy way of doing it.

Bought a USB tv adpater and a video, missus fed the video whilst the Tv cards software saved it , i came home and split it into the various tapes then encoded to dvd overnight on monster pc.

With decent encoding and video with clean heads, you got a very good picture, i used to even make a menu from a stills within the movie, god i was nice :D

Should find someone local to do it cheap.

Am I correct in thinking that this can be done from VHS player to DVD HDD recorder? Just bought a Sony 870 HDD recorder and thought I saw it mentioned somewhere.

€25 to have one VHS tape transferred to DVD  Why oh why would you do that? If it were just movies, I'd just buy it on dvd. Home videos are obviously a different kettle of fish but you could buy a dvd hdd recorder and do it yourself and you'd actually save money if you have alot of tapes to transfer.
