I want to transfer a file to a Ubuntu server that I am running in vmware fusion.
    The server IP is 192.168.1.20.

I have done this before on a Windows Machine to Ubuntu server but I have not got a clue how to do it on Mac.

I have tried Go -> Connect to server -> enter IP but I can't connect.

Is there any tool that I can use to do this?

How are you sharing from Ubuntu? If you're using Samba then prefix the IP address in 'Connect to Server' that you used above with smb://

If you have ssh setup on Ubuntu you could transfer the files via sftp.

Use connect to server with an address like smb://servername/sharename. By default Mac OS X assumes it's an apple file protocol AFP share.
