In fact it's like buses. You wait for a Casino to arrive and then two come at once. I attended the Castle Casino tonight for a €50 FO. Lovely place just behind McHale park. Plenty of space. comfy chairs. Good dealers. Highly recommend. Some of the faces you'd recognise from the Adelaide in Sligo.

Then I believe in six weeks Mick Murray is opening a place in the centre of the town.

So things are looking up in Mayo.

Behind Mchale Park! Thats a little out of the way is'nt it. I will certainly be going in when i move back home. Something like this is long overdue in Mayo, do you know who is running it Fatboydim? Fair play to them for giving it a go.

Some of the same staff from the Adelaide - Gina etc. It's where Toymaster used to be.

That's terrible. What is the west coming to? The last frontier has been conquered. Is bluffing allowed? Jacks to open?

    My father's home town.

Toymaster gone!! thats sad, or did they just move down the town.

Thats a great space though for a casino, lots of room i think in that building, pity about the location. Anyway im looking forward to trying it out!

Yeah, location isn't great but my gf's parents live close-ish by.

Cue loads of "just popping down to the shop love" (meanwhile, 4 hours later) ..... :D

Fantastic - my wife is from Castlebar.
This could help me avoid sitting in watching one episode of Cops after another with the inlaws when i'm there!

Sounds like heaven compared to soaps ;)

Sneaking out for one hell of a "milk run". Coming back a number of hours later with empty pockets and exhuding a distinct smell of irish whiskey.

Oh, and no milk ...... :D

So its looking like the casino in castlebar was a short lived luxury. The council have refused to grant the change in planning permission to allow them to place a casino instead of a retail shop. And it is looking like they wont reopen again after closing last Thursday.

They also refused one for in the center of town also.

Whats annoying is that it had already had a nice number of regulars and we here in the west are back to the crap shoot pub games crap money.

I worry that this also may become a precedent for other councils around the country who don't like the idea of a casino in their county. Even though there is no problem with bookies!

Are they not going to fight the decision?

I also thought the one in the centre of town did have permission. But that maybe it wasn't going ahead as the town wasn't big enough for two.

    It's a real shame

They must have forgotten about the brown envelopes or maybe the owners are from Dublin, that is a sure way to get turned down for planning permission...

What a disgrace. What about the people employed there or the owners who have invested so much time, effort and finances on the back of false promises made by the local council.

As this area has a history of electing tds who are as crooked as a dogs hind leg its no surpise the council dont allow this casino.
The owners probably didnt have the know how where to give the brown envelopes as carfax pointed out.

Well it looks like the owners were trying to be cute and open up without even applying for a change in planning on the retail unit. They were hoping i guess that since they had opened and were established that they may be allowed to continue operating.
So they need to apply now, you can be sure the council are going to make an example of them!
As for the other Casino application, the building they wanted to put it into as far as i am aware has a doorway or connection into a pub. And that i presume is where the old casino/gambling law covers, gambling on a licenced premises. So who knows what will happen.

Looks like our prayers have been answered:pac:

"Castle Card Club" on Main Street opened Friday last week.

Went in on thursday night around 3am, on route to taxi-rank (Needless to say I lost my taxi money). Played Blackjack and Roulette, great dealers/staff and a generally friendly atmosphere. Will be heading back tonight hopefully.

Tourneys every night bar tuesdays, range from €10+5 re-buy to €90+10 FO. Cash games running too, not sure what the blinds are.

thanks for that, if anyone has a number for them that would be handy and start times if known for tourneys and does anybody know what time the cash game usually kicks off at, thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 834 ✭✭✭Reillyman

Don't have a number, will get one tonight and post it in the morning. I think the Tourneys usually start around 9.30, not 100% on that but the one tonight does anyway. Cash probably kicks off from around 11 on maybe?

The tourneys are kicking off at 9.30PM, and they seem pretty on the ball about it, allowing late reg for ~1hr. All good considering last Friday several people showed up at the last minute, field was 3 tables for the €50FO.

Structure seems solid, Clock is prob a little fast for anything over a €200 F/O but for the entry fee it seems sound. The cash games are playing $50 min €1/2 w/ a 500 max buyin, cannot tell you what the standard of play is like, hav'nt played it yet.

Some blackjack/roulette as well. Staff seem dead on, free tea/coffee/coke/snacks (beers after 12).

Was here last night, lovely room, really decent set up, comfy chairs, friendly staff, very generous on the refreshments - free red bull & beer in addition to tea/coffee/soft drinks was available to all who asks for it.

Tournament was few mins late starting off with just 8 players, more players came in, eventually ended up with two full tables. One complaint: when the tables were broken into two 6/7 players on each - no deadstacks were put out, 2/3 latecomers that were put on my table (including one who arrived half way through 3rd level) were given full 8k stacks when they should have been given 'blinded down' stacks. Rewarding players coming in just before end of 3rd level with a full starting stack only encourages them to keep coming in late IMO. Better incetitives needed to get players in before the start time me-thinks...

Standard of play is good-to-soft with a nice mix of decent players; along with John-the-Farmer types playing ATC betting/calling with low/middle pairs/'they were soooooted' hitting 2 pair/trips/flushes; and Passive Rocks limping in with KK/QQ/JJ/AK/AQ and mini-betting/calling to the river with their hands holding up good(!) No different than Voodoo/Jackpot/Fitz really! :D

Poker gods really had it in for me: had AA hamered by 77, A4s beaten by 73s and TT no match for the mighty J6... gone just before final table.

Uber soft cash table with money constantly being reloaded by several LAG players overplaying ace rags and low pairs but the Poker Gods made sure it was the undoing of me too - ran €70 up to €225 in 1.5hours then lost it all in one pot when my flopped straight ran into quads. Meh!

One strange incident happened on the cash table: two players in a pot with king high rainbow/dry board - player A checks, player B bets out €5 on the river into a €30 approx pot, player A tanks and player B starts this speechplay that he has a pair and shows one low card (not on the board) player A calls the €5 declares he has a pair too. Player B then shows his other card (king) for top pair and claims the pot... I laughed then suggested that ruling should be called on this (anywhere else and player B's hand would be declared dead) but the dealer said it was 'allowed' and gave player B the pot...

Well worth the visit - lovely club, just be prepared for some sick beats! :D
