Busy Lizzie flowers

We have a busy lizzie plant. When a flower starts to grow a little shoot grows out the bottom and grows in a curve to about 3cm long. It doesn't hook itself or stick to anything.
Does anyone know what it is for, and what the shoot is called?
Do any other flowers have them?

Occasionally one of them will land on a leaf where the shoot may give the flower a bit if support, but not usually.

(This is where flower and plant queries should go, right?)
