youtube being throttled on bt?

i'm on the 3mb BT package but youtube has been loading really slowly recently, too slowly even to stream stuff off it to the point where it is buffering every 5 or 10 seconds.

other video sites work fine (metacafe etc), and indeed other sites in general and I'm getting full speed with everything i do online except youtube. i thought maybe they were having bandwidth issues, but its fine at work during the day, but if i do an online ping of youtube from dnsstuff.com then i get a ping of 25-50ms and when i do it from home i get 200-400ms so something is very wrong, even tho i get sub 50ms pings in most other sites and with online games.

    has anyone else experienced this?

on the BT 3MB package also, and only remarked on this to a friend the other day. Assumed it was utube themselves that had throtled the output due to pressure on their servers?

I'm on BT's 2MB package and noticed the same thing for a couple of weeks now. So bad i don't even bother trying to watch anything on YouTube anymore.

same issue here - i've noticed more often than not, some videos just don't load at all. The same videos work fine on my office connection or 3G connection.

I used to have this problem too, then I downloaded Speedbit Video Accelerator...They fly along now...

I've noticed it and I'm on UTV BB. Seems to be getting better recently though

I am on the BT 2mb pack here in Maynooth and I am having the same problem, I have a pc connected to my 32" Samsung, I had mates up the other night and tried to watch videos on YouTube but it would drive you nuts buffering all the time.

I thought it was YouTube’s severs but maybe not?

I have a laptop and that is also on the same home network and that is just as bad, just in case people think it's a virus or something.

Is there any way to prove if BT is throttling back YouTube?

here's the average ping times (directly from my router, not my PC) for a couple of sites.

    boards.ie (89.234.66.107) 23.1ms
    bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.131) 36.2ms
    ie.youtube.com (208.65.153.251) 209ms
    youtube.com (208.65.153.253) 211ms
    microsoft.com (207.46.197.32) 203ms
    microsoft.ie (80.93.17.47) 102ms
    yahoo.com (216.109.112.135) 149ms
    yahoo.ie (217.146.186.221) 45ms
    oracle.com (141.146.8.66) 141ms
    oracle.ie & .uk (208.69.32.139) 107-ms
    google.com (64.233.167.99) 145ms
    google.ie (66.249.93.104) 60ms
    metacafe.com (72.32.103.177) 140ms

i know it's hardly any concrete proof and i would expect longer ping times for more distant servers, but it seems like the ie and com youtube sites are in the same location, wherever that is, but metacafe and others work fine, so I don't see what the problem is unless it's being throttled.

would be interesting to get more feedback from people not using bitstream products.

i'd say that these days youtube is one of the main (legit) reasons for lots of home users using broadband, so it's not really on if someone is doing something like this on purpose.

just out of curiosity, how many people having problems here are using the opendns DNS servers? i changed to them when there were lots of DNS problems in Ireland a while back and it's all been fine till now. maybe that might have something to do with it, I don't know.

P.S> I've tried youtube from a Linux linux desktop with firefox and opera, and xp with IE and opera and it's no different on any platform or browser, so i'm confident it's not that. metacafe loads plenty more quickly than needed to stream almost instantly, along with video's from the apple site etc.

    i'm stumped. anyone?

    www.speedbit.com/video_accelerator/

avast gave an adware alert on that product

    my pings :

Pinging ie.youtube.com [208.65.153.253] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 208.65.153.253: bytes=32 time=214ms TTL=239

I use the BT dns servers

I'm on BT 3mb and have recently noticed the same problem with youtube. I gave up trying to watch anything from it.

I just did a test with the brother he is on a 2mb package with Eircom in Westmeath I am with BT 2MB package in Maynooth

We first went to www.btyahoo.co.uk/speedtest and downloaded the 15MB file we both had an average transfer speed of 215kbs

We then both went to www.youtube.com and downloaded the Simpsons WOW video, He had no trouble at all and the downloaded and watched the video no problem I on the other hand gave up as it kept stopping and started to buffer the video.

I don’t know if this means to much but it does prove that it’s not the YouTube servers that are the problem.

noticed same problem myself with bt 2mb

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

tried it using the BT dns servers (from the support site, the 194 ones) and it was no different. wasn't really expecting it to be, but it was worth a go.

    BT DNS:
    192.111.39.1
    192.111.39.4

    Eircom DNS:
    213.94.190.194
    213.94.190.236

yep, that's the ones. straight from the BT support site. i just got my 192's and 194's mixed up. :)

i've mailed youtube about it, but so far i've just got the default copy/paste reply that they give to anyone having connection problems. i've mailed them back again with a link to the thread so they can see it's not just a one off. who knows, maybe it'll get far enough up the food chain to actually get something done about it.

i'm actually at home atm and normally i have no trouble from work (which comes via my company's web proxy in the UK) at this time of day, but I'm still having buffering issues from here now.

Same problem for me, BT 3Mb package in Leixlip. It has been like this for a few weeks also - assumed it was YouTube until I seen this thread!

All other flash based video sharing sites seem fine.

yeah its pretty much the same for me in Swords, always have to pause the vid to let it cache and then watch it

Me too! On the 3mb BT package.

Has anyone rang BT about it? I know it's a sacrifice but it might help?

Having the same problem with RTE archive programmes. really annoying as i had become used to watching at my convenience rather than when transmitted. utube became a problem about the same time - 3 or 4 weeks ago.
