When I put in my new CPU the computer will attempt to start up and then just die. I've upgraded from a AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8 Ghz Socket 754 to AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.6Ghz Socket 754.

I bought a new Cooler Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO (Socket 754/939/940/AM2) for it aswell.

The PC boots fine without the new CPU installed?

    My PSU : https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=332660

    My Mobo : https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=300671

    Help?

Take a look at this ,

    http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_9487%5E10248,00.html

Heres the thing , I can find no mention of a 4000+ 754 processor , they (4000+would all be either X2 or AM2 processors.

Obviously they shouldnt even fit in that motherboard , so assuming you have a 4000+ processor it would seem that that motherboard is not capable of running with it as 754 during its short lifespan , only took processors up to 3700+ ,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_754

maybe the board needs a Bios upgrade to work with that processor or it actually is the wrong processor for that board type.

It fits into the socket just fine. I bought it from ebay, I thought it was strangely powerful at first. Would I be better off sending it back and getting a 3700+ ?

Edit : Fiddling around with it now I realised I had the heatsink on backwards :p

Everything comes on now, fans etc. But nothing loads.. harddrive doesnt make a sound, nothing appears on screen. Is the CPU fried? :(

Looking around now, youre right actually. Every site says there is no such thing as a 754 4000+, strange..

I had a look at the link there , maybe its geniune , I never heard of those processors though and this bit worries me , the quote is taken from the sellers page by the way ...
Because some heatsink and fan can not fit with mobile 754 CPU, so that our technician added the top which taken from spare part of regular 754 CPU, hence it looks exactly same as regular version of 754 pins CPU, and all 754 socket heatsink and fan can fit with it. Due to this reason, the P/N code on the top might not show it as Athlon 64 4000+ (the top is actually taken from other spare CPU), but please don't feel worry, it is original AMD Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ manufactured by AMD, NOT FAKED. You can check this out in BIOS or any professional software. WE ALSO HAVE THESE CPUS WITHOUT THE TOPS, IF YOU WOULD LIKE THEM PLEALE TELL US AFTER YOU BOUGHT!!!

See , that would have me running a mile , however they may well be geniune , I just cant find anything on them is all !
(the top is actually taken from other spare CPU),
Ive also never heard of a cpu that had a removeable top ... and I work in Semiconductors , the IC's packaging/casing are usually mould injected and the part number is usually laser etched afterwards. There is no non destructive way to alter the final module as far as I know.

According to the EPoX website the mobo only supports up to "Socket-754 based AMD Athlon-64 1.6GTs Hyper Transport processors with up to 3700+ "

If your familiar with the website, id look for a bios update to see if it supports your new cpu. Otherwise it looks like your out of luck.

Its possible, I've seen several A64 IHS' removed, its a very dangerous job and obviously if your not careful, you'll destroy the CPU. But the results are pretty good in terms of cooling etc..

The guy does seem genuine, hes trying to help me through email, but it looks like the CPU just isnt supported by the mobo. Suppose it serves me right for presuming it would be alright, i just thought 754 CPU + 754 Mobo = compatibility.

I have a 3400+ on the way instead.
