I eventually got my ps3 on friday.I had 2 trade in my 360 so i went 2 gamestop. I got 260 for the 360 but i was well disapointed with what i got for my 360 games, i got just 4 euro for pes6!!!I got d 60 gb wit nfs carbon. motorstorm, bluray remote and blu-ray black hawk down for 540. d only bad thing is dat dey forgot 2 put black hawk down in the box and i am yet to go bak to get it.motorstorm is exceelent but nfs carbon was a real letdown with poor graphics.Today i got the 1.93 update from the playstation network and i'm able 2 use my pics as a wallpaper. i also want to get the gran turismo hd concept free demo but i'm goin 2 wait til november bcos i'd sday i'm already over dis months download limit nd d demo is 690mb!!!

    What 2 games you get?
I got Warhawk and Fifa 08 (didn't get PES after reading too many bad reviews about it being slow)

I'm a casual as opposed to serious gamer.

I bought warhawk for the flight simulation and feeling of flying a plane with the motion sensitive controls. I really like the game more than I expected.

FIFA 08 looks like it's best one ever made with great gameplay but it's taking me a while to get used some basics (like keeping a shot low)

I'm just back. Got Resistance, Heavenly Sword and Big Fight Night, Guy wasn't too flexible with the game. Well wasn't at all, but happy with those ones.

I traded in the rubbish nfs carbon today and got fifa 2008(after also reading about framerate problems on pes2008).Its graphics are amazing and it feels a joy to play(the ball no longer sticks to the players feet). I also found out today that half life, the orange box is also coming on ps3 but not for a couple of weeks but fifa should keep me entertained until then......

I spoke to the assistants in a few places and they said that they won't be getting any more 60G versions in, so once the ones they have in stock are gone, that's it. The couple of Argos' I checked each had about 30 of them in stock, so I'd say once they're gone that'll be it as I don't think Sony have any more in their warehouses. I'd say they'll all be gone by, or soon after, Christmas.

I've streamed divx/xvid to the PS3 ove my home wireless network using Tversity on the PC. Don't know if it will play from a DVD or memory card, I must check that out this evening.
Did you check to see if this worked?

It works when streaming through TVersity but won't play divx/xvid from a disc or memory stick. You have to encode them as mp4 first. It's a shame they didn't include the divx codec, maybe in future revisions it will be there.

Cool, Thanks. Be great if the next firmware has it. Handy out.

Actually I bought a PS3 60gb from HMV yesterday. Would I need to flash it with new firmware?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

Well if you get a fairly new game, it'll flash it for you. Otherwise download the F\W from the PS3 site and burn it to a disc and flash it.

Just a blank cd, or does it have to be a DVD? Can you do it with you laptop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

I imagine either would do. i keep using a dvdrw. ItsPossible through a USB key as well, just put it in in PS3\update folder on the root, not 100% on the USB bit, never got it working.

so whats the best deal on the ps3 at the moment?

Virgin are still doing good deals, got a 60GB PS3 from there today with 2 games (MotorStorm & Heavenly Sword) & an extra offical Sixaxis controller for €500 or you can get the same deal without the extra controller and get 2 Blu-ray movies instead.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 Barricade-S281

I can get you all a 60GB PS3 in Black or White for less than €300. Brand New and all. Its deadly! Just ask me for more info. PM me tho. :)

Anyone know how long that deal is going on for or if it applies to all stores?

    Thx

not sure, but i'd say that deal will hold on what ever stock of 60GB consoles they have left.

Can you pick any two games with the Virgin deal, or is there a set list of games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭gaz15

Exsqueeze my ignorance, planning to get a ps3 this week...is there really that much difference between the 40gb and 60gb ps3s?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

20 gigs, 2 extra usb ports, card readers. Not a whole lot but for the extra 100 but some shops have offers on the 60 gig.

Anyone know what type of trade in value a 360 premium has against a Ps3--preferably a 60gb but Im not too pushed.

Oh and does the ps3 have a web browser built in?

    Yeh has a web browser.

I tried in game a couple of weeks ago and they said i'd get 210. I then tried gamestop and i'd get 260 there and dats where i ended up getting my ps3. Generally i prefer it to 360 although i found out after buying it dat u cant play music during ur games like d 360. In gamestop you can get a pre-owned ps3 60 gb for 350 by the way.

    Hiya guys/gals...

As a very confused girlfriend I need help as what to buy the other half for Xmas....saw a poster for PS3 with something about 40gb for 399euro...
Can I get less gb for cheaper? does it even exist?!
    Thanks in advance

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

40gb is now the only one theyre making, so its that or nothing

399 should get you the machine and a game if you shop around

a few quid more will get you more games/extras

If you have wifi or an ethernet cable connected to the internet you can download the update straight onto your PS3

The 40GB console doesnt have the backwards compatibilty though. And for gamers like me who have amassed a collection of PS2 games from WAY back in the day this was a deciding point and I have the 60GB now. Mind you the sony BWComp isnt great anyway!
And now that I have my PS3...it's sitting there gathering dust while me and the 360 while the hours away! :D

Is the Virgin deal (60gb) now the best? It looks better than Argos and HMV.
Its €500 with 2 games and 2 blu-ray movies (pick any movie you like in store).
I was getting one in Blanch but they were out of 60gb in the end. The girl checked and reserved me one in Liffey Valley.

Im excited now, nice toy for Christmas and i can load Linux on to it for media centre etc (already have a media centre PC :D).

Also upgrading the hard drive is supposed to be easy and even encouraged by sony? Apparently they provide instructions on how to do it :D

Some ape PM'd me!!! *sniff sniff* Aye BS :)

Anyone get the "seconds" PS3 from GameStop? Any good for the price of 350 euro?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭Rael

Went into HMV in Grafton Street today. It was hoping to get the 60GB bundle with Motorstorm, Resistance and Fifa 08 for €519. I mentioned to the guy it was my intent to trade in RoF and Moto for Ratchet and Clank in Gamestop as part of their trade 2 for 1 offer.

He looked at me funny and I asked could he do 60GB, Ratchet and Fifa for the same price? He checked and said no, and said maybe of R&C was €60 as opposed to €70. I told him I was also getting a second controller, the bluray remote and a wii accessory pack. He said it to the manager and came back agreed to do a deal for me.

I got 60GB PS3, Ratchet and Clank, FIFA 08 and they gave me a copy of Heavenly Sword for €519. I then got the 2nd controller, the remote control and the wii accessory pack for €90 using my student discount.

    Happy days :D

So i picked it up in Virgin, Liffey valley. They did not have resistance so i took heavenly sword and COD4 paying €10 extra. Also got 2 blue ray movies. Casino Royale and Open Season. So €500 bundle + €10 extra. Im happy.

Hi, i've a chance to get an unused PS3 60gb from a friend in the states - does anyone know of any connectivity issues this might have in relation to Wifi etc? i'm assuming the model is more or less the same as what we're getting in the shops here - i've no idea about these things, just trying to buy a cool xmas present for himself

Should be fine, no issues with Wi-fi. Nearly al PS3 games are region free but your PAL PS2, DVDs and PAL Blu-rays won't play on it.

thanks for your help! I didn't think of that aspect of it - is there much point in buying it partly for the Blu-ray player then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

Its one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market but if you are interested in using it as such you will have to buy movies from the US or Canada. There are several sites that offer good prices on Blu-Rays inclusing postage to Ireland.

I'd almost prefer to have a US one. This way you can buy all your Blu-Rays from the states for dirt cheap!!

so plenty of pro's & cons! thanks a million for all the advice, its very much appreciated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

I rang around the shops in Dublin today looking for 60Gb PS3.
No stocking anymore in Virgin, gone from system.
None in HMV in Blanch but HMV in Pavillion SC in Swords have plenty so drove over there this evening and picked up one with Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank.

Well after some more reading online, the american PS3 console won't play european PS2 games - looking like less of a moneysaver - maybe I should just shell out the full 500 here......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

I told you that already in post #193.
USA PS3 wont play PAL PS2 games, PAL DVDs or PAL Blu-Ray films

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭0scar

Oops, missed the PS2 bit! Don't have HD tv yet (decent plasma though) so the blu-ray isn't an immediate concern; just want to be sure it'll be compatible with the telly etc, & don't want to end up with something that won't work at all for the sake of e100. Suppose i could buy older games from the USA, but might be a pain in the long run - as you can tell, I'm in the dark about this stuff.
