Reduced 60GB PS3 deals?

Thanks, unfortunately Cork is about the only part of the country I don't go through. Like I said my PS2 is acting up and I suspect it's getting ready to die. I just checked and the 60Gb PS3 seems to be mainly sold-out in the US too, but they have the 40Gb for $399 (€275) and the 80Gb for $499 (€345), I eventually found a 60Gb in the US, but it was $499 the same price as the 60Gb. Neither would work with my existing PS2 library, but at that savings I could probably pick up a 2nd hand PS2 in Game and I guess in addition to the bigger hard drive another advantage of the 80Gb is that I could also play cheap 2nd hand US PS2 games on it.

Does anyone know of anywhere in Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, etc. where I could get a 60Gb?

Just ring around the shops. I had to do it and many others also.
I gave you a few suggestions of places earlier
Currys, PC World, Dixons, Power City, DID, Harvey Norman...

Trade Kane and Lynch for something good. Uncharted is out on Friday, fantastic game.

..I think it sucks what Sony has done to their loyal customers, by screwing them and not making the PS3 backwards compatible, I know the 60Gb is backwards compatible, but only 80% and now they've discontinued it.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but you're one customer. Sony dont make large scale fiscal decisions based on the feedback of 1 or 2 customers. Independent market research (check eurogamer.net and ign.com surveys) show that new PS3 customers a) dont play old PS2 games and b) couldnt care less about backwards compatibility.

Do you buy CD players and expect them to play vinyl?

Wish this debate would stop, I sold my PS2 and ALL my PS2 games when I upgraded.

    smcelhinney,

You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't believe it! Plenty of people other than myself are annoyed at the games the big corporations play but unfortunately there is very little we can do about it. Regionalisation is another bone of contention and it's more than just DVDs, games and inkjet cartridges. Eventually, I probably will phase out the older PS2 games, but that won't happen over night. Also remember there is still only a limited number of PS3 games available compared to PS2 games, I know this will eventually change, but this also won't happen over night.Playing vinyl on a CD player is a pretty bad analogy since they are two completely different technologies. We know that PS2 games can work on PS3 machines but Sony has decided against it because it's cheaper to make the boxes for just the PS3 games and it's not to have a cheaper price point, I'm willing to pay more for the backwards compatibility, but they've figured they can make more money by selling boxes that cost less to make and forcing customers to do a 100% upgrade of games. Any marketing data they may have to reflect that customers don't want backwards compatibility is skewed to reflect the direction Sony wants to go in, and that is solely based upon larger profits!!$$€€!! So you're right, Sony doesn't make large scale fiscal decisions based on the feedback of 1 or 2 customers or even millions if they think they can still keep those customers and make even more money. Once again greed is the motivator, it's not like they'd loose money by providing a backward compatibility option. If you don't believe it that people actually want backwards compatibility just Google "PS2 work on PS3" and see how many hits you get.

Meanwhile, I've called all around and it appears that other than possibly Cork, there doesn't seem to be any PS3 60Gb boxes left in the country. If anyone knows of any place in Dublin that has any PS3 60Gb boxes available I'd greatly appreciate it if you could let me know.

    Boz:)

I'd contend there's a significant minority that DO want the backwards compatibility. I traded in my old PS2 not because i particularly wanted a PS3 as such, but 'cos i knew that with the cruddy games i had PLUS a few quid in vouchers i could get the 60Gb model for around €350. Thus i kept the PS2 games i hadn't finished and now have a machine i can play 'em in, a Blu Ray player and something that will, in time, play games that i'm looking forward to having in the future like GTA4 and MGS4.

I got Genji and Resistance: fall of man with the machine and in the two months since i've had it, i've not played either that much; the facility to play DVDs has gotten more use. Hell my Nintendo Wii and super Paper Mario has gotten more use.

Fact is that right now there ain't enough games for the PS3 that would make me think that i could happily jettison my PS2 games. Mind you, i'm an old fart and more likely to resist the temptation to buy a new game until i've seen the final cut scene on the older ones first!

i dunno about trading in a game i havent even played yet. I got COD 4 coming to me and fifa 08 too. unchartered is prob what i wud trade it in for BUT i cud get UC for €40 anyway on ebay instead of trading in K&L for €30-40 and pay the €30-40 out of my pocket right. so via ebay i get to keep K&L

nah it was just them two games or get another deal. i wnet all arnd the square and that was the best offer (tried hmv, virgin, smyths, argos, xtra-game, tescos). i asked if i cud change the games but was told if have to trade in the games. BTW it comes with only one controller if i didnt mention that above.

dunno when it ends sorry, i never thought to check that. BTW i think this is the best offer of a 40 gb available since id rather have 2 recent games than 3 launch games (i personally just find it very hard to give time to games that i know are over a year old, i dont take them seriously and give enough time).

Yeah it's the best deal I've seen so far. There's an awful lot of deals that come with Lego Star Wars and the likes. Those kind of games wouldn't interest me. I was gonna get AC anyways. Thanks for the swift response Goat.

I've tried all of the shops and asked around, the only possibility left is the new Virgin Megastore in Kilkenny, according to someone from a Virgin in Dublin, the Kilkenny shop has 4 of the 60Gb PS3s. Unfortunately the Kilkenny store hasn't opened yet, there's no phone number and no one seems to know when it will open. There is some speculation that it will open this weekend, but it was suppose to open on 1-Dec. and it didn't! I can't see driving all the way to Kilkenny and they may not even be open and if they do open this weekend and I'm the 1st in the door they might not have any or they could all be reserved. If anyone should be in Kilkenny and gets one of these I might be in a position to take it off your hands at a small reasonable profit to you.:)

I checked eBay and all I saw was Japanese versions, would these play Irish PS2 games and/or PAL Blue-ray DVDs?

Otherwise does anyone know of any where else I can get a 60gB PS3?:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

Check the consoles FS section of adverts.ie, the sister site/spin-off of boards.ie. The 60GB version pops up every few days for sale, but its well sought after.

Jap 60GB won't play PAL PS2 games and seeing as thats the point of getting 60GB Vs 40GB, its pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Bozacke

    Thanks, I wasn't sure about the Jap. PS3 and I'll try adverts.ie !!!:)

i dont know if it would be too far for you but you could try ringing slattery's or world of wonder in clonmel. they are 2 places in town that people would not go to directly to buy a specific model console and may have some stock lying about. I got one of the old large silver ps2s months after they stopped making them (needed it for use with the hard drive). if they had one and you explained you're coming to collect it, im sure they would reserve it or you could pay by credit card, worth a phone call anyway. they wont have any bundle deals on them though

Just got the 60gb second hand from gamestop for €350 with 3months guarantee.

But when i say "second hand", i dont see how it is because its in pristine polished condition with all original packing, and all components (wires, plugs etc) are still in their original melted-closed sleeves and electrical tags.

Obviously got someone's unwanted christmas present!

That was a good deal. I spent ages on eBay and places looking for one, but in the end just went for the 40GB version. I'll hardly buy PS2 games anyway, and I don't have any.

Which Gamestop did you get the PS3 60GB in?
Any ideas if any gamestops have any left?

Bought PS1 with Actua Soccer first year it came out - Good memories

Bought the PS2 having sampled Grand theft auto and loved vice city (san andreas wasnt bad)

So I dont really play the playstation much - used to have an odd game of pro evo but tend to stick with PC games -shooters with the mouse and keyboard - cant beat it.

Anyway Ive been reading a lot of previews of the new grand theft auto and it makes me want to buy it for this alone .... are there really any other decent games fro the PS3 with lastability? not shooters!

I reckon you should get over 400e for the console alone anyways. There always seem to be the few diehards who want to be able to play ps2 games or play SACD's or whatever, and theyd be willing to pay for that privilege. There are'nt that many launch 60gbs around ya know so if youre putting this on adverts, start high and stay fairly close to that. Some person will pay over the odds for a 60gb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

I have a 60gb, got one of the last of them just before christmas in 2007.
Trapattoni apart from GTA4, One brilliant game is Little Big Planet. Its a fantastic game, though very frustrating at times. Especially a level with a giant wheel you need to navigate inside and get out of.

GTA4 is lots of fun online too.
