I would like to start a discussion on this topic under this tag if anyone has an interest.. having read a lot around the topic.. I suppose the question is that in all earth based religeon how does this fit in if at all or not? Incense and chanting vs liberty cap and other things. It's not a a pro/against thread and certainly not a Drug thread.. .I would like to understand how or if any "help" was used in the past and what priciples and ethics the practioners were involved and how that writes it's ways in this day and age?
The spark of this thread was remembering my mother bringing home the "mabigonion" and using it in school to teach kids about welsh things lol.. to be honest it was always a hugely popular text but always one that the artist would use to convey their work, always with kelidoscope graphics of sheep..symbolism lol

Some believe that religion is derived from ancient people taking entheogens. I myself wouldn't be too far from such a view.

Before psychedelic drugs became so stigmatised they used to be used quite commonly as entheogens AFAIK. In fact, there was one study done in Harvard in the 50s or 60s where half a congregation in a Christian chapel were given LSD before a service and the other half sugar pills(placebo). Those who received LSD had very profound and fulfilling spiritual experiences that day. The fact that such drugs are demonised nowadays is an awful pity.

Anyway, I have a huge interest in the subject of the relationship between religion and drugs, but I don't know much about traditional practices etc. Hopefully there will be some interesting responses from others on here which I can enjoy reading.

Yeah! One of my favourite topics.

For a modern approach to pschedelics see: Timothy Leary, Albert Hoffman, Terrence McKenna, Carlos Castaneda, John Lily. I can't recall any others at the moment.

I believe entheogen use is common among shamanic cultures and people. Often used as divinatory tools to seek answers. I think they are often used in conjunction with methods of trance. Taking these substances is not a method in itself, there is still much self-discipline to be conducted in their use.
A book I've been meaning to get is The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby.

    Good luck.
