Not 100% sure where to put this thread so Mods feel free to move as appropriate.

    Hi,

Can anyone suggest how you go about choosing a solicitor for your business requirements?

I don't know anyone who can recommend one so I have to trust my own judgement....but where do you start? What criteria do you look for? There are loads of solicitors near my office but how should I choose one over the other?

If I just choose one out of the Golden Pages I could end up with some shyster who could rip me off for doing very little work.

    cheers.

    Hi there,

Go through the golden pages and picking 4 or 5 people randomly. Ask to speak to each of them to discuss your requirements. The ones that bring up cash first are usually the best to stay away from!!

I suppose it all depends on whether you need a high powered solicitor to manage complicated business deals or just someone you can turn to for simple advice and guidance.

Always ask for a free initial consultation. If they have a problem with this, move on.

    This method worked for me.

    Best of luck

    Hi there,

this depends on what you actually need. However you need someone to rely on. There is a successful networking organisation called BNI, try www.bni.com or directly our chapter at www.bnitrinity.com I am a member of and you will meet there not only solicitors but also other businesspeople you might need when doing business. And you meet them personally so that you can have a chat and decide on your own.

In our chapter there is one good solicitor, they however specialise in trademarks, so if you have an issue with these, you can contact them. Otherwise they will definitely be able to recommend some good solicitor for you. Try http://www.bnitrinity.com/Merrion_Legal.html.

As I know them personally, I can assure that they are the "good ones" you can rely on and trust, if their offering meets your needs. They also have successful clients.

    Hope this helps.

You really have to find a solicitor through your personal network. There's no other real way I'm afraid. It's a two-way thing - good solicitors are busy and whilst they're always looking for more work and new clients, they would rather deal with people they know who have been introduced to. The reason isn't that they're antisocial or anything, it's just that when a solicitor takes on a client, he/she is taking a risk of a smaller or greater amount.

    Best,

    Antoin.

and, if you already have an accountant - ask him/her to recommend one. probably not the best but safer bet. i'm sure all these professionals have networking around that you might be able to help you.
