Currently in rented accomodation and my friend has wireless BT. It's currently not secured. Just wondering how easy it is to set this up?

What is the make and model of the router?

I'll need to check that out when I get home (on shift work for the weekend) but I'll post it up later.

The usual is to type the routers IP into the address bar in internet explorer.

    Its usually 192.168.1.1

This will get you into the router's settings. Go to wireless security. Go for the WPA option as WEP isn't very secure. It will ask you for a password. Enter anything you want.

You connection to the router should then drop. Go to network connections and chose the BT router again. This time you'll be asked to enter the password to connect to the router.

Okay, sorry for the delay in responding but I'm only back in the house just now.

The modem is the typical one that Esat BT provide, a Prestige 623R-T1, ASDL Dual Link Router. I presume that he bought the wireless router seperately. It's a 3Com Office Connect Wireless 11g Cable/DSL router. Any ideas?

Niall, I'll give your suggestion a shot.

    hi Vyse,

you will need to find out the IP address of the 3Com unit. Factory default IP's could be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 to navigate to the configuration webpage. Put http:// infront of the IP

Tha users manual would be a good start...which will also guide you to setting the wireless security. WPA is the one to go for.

You can setup Mac filter on those modems. A quick goolge search will show you how.
