    Question bout German history.....

On Blackboard, the module is called 'The Third Reich in Context (HIS20340)', but on the exam timetable pdf file, the module 'Third Reich in Context' is 2005E. The module '3rd Reich: Germany 1918-55' is HIS20340. Both are on different days... So just to verify, is it the latter that we're all doing? On Sat 10/5 @ 9am in the RDS?

I asked the first US history guy if there was any sources I could use for my exam as I had difficulty getting books for it. He said JSTOR is the main man basically. Does anybody do Italian History? Its at 9am on a SATURDAY. Buses dont start until 8 on a Saturday, I may have to get a taxi, which sucks.

The beauty of exams is they're not looking for refrences... So any source on the net will do for studying for the exam.

Dublin bus? Most start at 6am or 7am. What number are you getting?

If you're traveling from that far out just put yourself up for the night in a hostel and get the bus in from the city. Much cheaper.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's the latter. It would make sense as the module lecturers were on at the same time as the other other history exams which are on at the same time.

    9am exam = not fun :(

I rechecked the bus timetable, I am grand which is a relief, I was looking at a different day.

    3rd Reich questions:

    1) Why did the Nazis become the prime beneficiary of Weimar’s political and economic crisis
    ?
    2) Who voted for Hitler and why?
    3) How ‘socialist’ was National Socialism?
    4) How much did ‘ordinary Germans’ know about the Holocaust?
    5) Was the Holocaust the inevitable result of nazi ideology or a wartime
    solution?
    6) ‘A modern masterpiece’ or ‘fascist propaganda’? Discuss these conflicting
views of Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will
    7) Why did Nazi Germany lose the Second World War?

I'm gonna try and get a good answer ready for question (5), cos that seems (to me, an outsider!) to be a bit of a live topic in academic debate. Dr Gerwarth talked about it on the Late Late Show if I remember correctly :D

http://www.johndclare.net/Weimar1.htm <-- just stumbled across this website. Quite a good outline for the first two questions. Focuses well on the reasons for this and that etc... which is what the examiners want to see! Theres even a comprehensive self-test which is handy for checking up facts!

I agree with Dave also.. Know your facts and figures for the Holocaust, its Gerwarths speciality and will certainly come up. The fact that there is two questions about it on the sample paper is further evidence of this!

I have to say this exam should be grand now! :D

Yeah, I don't know what to study for that. I know he gave us the exam topics, but I don't know what to choose. I've done the origins of fascism, but the post war ones are complicated and I don't want to do two fascism questions. I may end up doing Giolitti and liberal Italy - though, then again, that's fairly complicated too.

Economic miracle question will be handy.

sorry back to Land religion and identity again - What is the structure of the paper again? is it 4 & 4, answer one from each section?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭simonrooneyzaga

whoops - just looked under assignments on blackboard and theres a past paper! yay - its 5 and 5, one from each :D:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,567 ✭✭✭delta_bravo

St. Leger / Sidney or Sussex should come up in Tadhg's section. I dont think there was an essay title on them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭simonrooneyzaga

im pretty sure essay titles and overlap with exam questions - has happened in every history module thus far. St.Leger and Sussex tie into the Surrender and regrant anyway so it should all be covered nicely! :)

    2) Who voted for Hitler and why?

Where are people going with this one?

a.) Taking the anti-communist/fear leading to dictatorship over democracy line or

b.) Looking more at electoral patterns and the groups that voted for Hitler? (Double Protestant nazi vote over catholic nazi vote, rural workers over urban, Big business' over small business').

If going the second route what are the concrete reasons for these trends?

Economic miracle question will be handy.

I've started doing that one and it's quite straightforward. Thanks for the advice! I have the exam topics written down as "Christian Democrats and postwar Italy OR Social history and economic miracle".

Does anyone know will there be a question on one or the other, or both?

does anyone know when you can pick up your corrected Land Religion and Identity essays that were due for the end of week 11?

Would be handy to know what state you were in before the exam :D

I went in today and there was no one there. Very annoying, I don't plan on being in UCD again this year.

For the third reich exam do you have to answer 2 questions?

Do you think the rise of nazism, the seizure of power and the holocaust are the essential topics to study and should cover the test?

And maybe study up on the weimar republic?
