my son will be going to college next year. ive read up a lot about fees and grants & Im a totally confused. I think college fees are not means tested and are paid by the government? to get a maintenance grant u need to have family income of less that ~49k but if the family income is more than 49k the fees are still paid by the government?

    any clarification appreciated!

All 3rd level fees are paid for unless your son goes to a private college.

There is a Registration Fee which will have to be paid which varies from college to college.

IF you have a medical card or qualify for the maintenance grant the Registration Fee is waved.

Your son's guidance counsellor should have information on this.
