Pulled up to see a client a couple of months back, and my dirty '96 polo got a disdainful look and I was on the back foot straight away.

I could splash out on something very nice, but with a relatively new mortgage I have better things to do.

I do get a generous mileage allowance in work, and I could make 2 or 3K from this p.a. with a concerted effort. I do not have a car allowance.

I have €10, maybe 15 to play with.

I think a marque is required, not too flash, coupe would suit my lifestyle - the backseats are storage space. And I need to fit golf clubs in the boot.

I had been seriously considering a 9-3, or A4, but both are a little large for my needs.

oh, and sorry for yet another, guide me to a new car cos I'm too lazy to look. I've been searching for 3 months and seem no closer.

Neither of those cars are particularly big. You wouldn't have to "need" one to justify getting one. They are both fine choices and if you will be doing some schmoozing, they are perfectly ok. Diesels will be good if you do lots of miles.

Coups are cool but more expensive pro rata, but not out of the question.

I'd love to have the guts to pick this up

got a decent quote for the insurance as well.

I'd have that in for €15k, presuming I knocked 10% off the asking.

But with 80 on the clock I'm afraid I'd never sell the thing in a years time.
