Has to go to Kaka. Cristiano Ronaldo will be in the top 3.

    Fabio Cannavaro (Italy),
    Thierry Henry (France),

Id be removing these 2 first off, as both (while being great players) haven't actualy done anything in the last year. Henry's barely played, and Cannavaro had a poor season.

Otherwise its ok. Lot of names there who weren't particularly special last season (gerrard for eg.) but they make their way in on reputation. Id leave em as they weren't actively poor/missing like the 2 above. They haven't a hope of winning or making the top 3 anyway so makes little difference.

Kaka will definately win with probably Ronaldo and maybe Drogba, Essien or Deco in the runners up spots.

On current form, I'd definitely give it to Messi. He was injured for a good while last year though and hasn't done enough to deserve it over the year.

Kaka is the most deservng player without a doubt, the guy is the best player in the world, has been for 2 years now imo....... henry shouldnt be on the list, he didnt play much , i think Kaka will get the award, but i cant see why theres a need for competition really, he is the only guy who deserves it over the last 12 months, ronaldo would be the next nearest to him i guess..... this season messi has been playing amazingly, but its only a month into the season!!! we talking about the best player for the whole year not just for the last month,

thats called the player of the month award!:p

as for my choice on the order i dont know,

    i would be

    Kaka
    Ronaldo

but id be hard pushed to find a third player, messi didnt play enough, neither did henry to be considered, cannavaro was poor by his own standards..... maybe john terry? junninho had a great year.....

Kaka or Messi I presume. Not really a 'short' list though is it?!

After last year I'd say Ruud is in with a shout there imo, he was immense. I'd imagine it'll go to Kaka.

he shouldnt be but your right, ronaldo will be in the top 3. all he needs is a bigger ego

anyone know when the results are anounced ?

Dec 17th...top 3 announced at the start of December.

    http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/media/newsid=613097.html

Edit: after reading that link I didn't realise that final voting by international coaches/captains doesn't take place until December. I thought it was already a done deal. With this in mind I don't think Kaka is a dead cert and could easily be overtaken by Messi or RVN. Kaka is odds on to win it with the bookies but I think I'll put a few bob on the 2 I've mentioned because the odds are pretty appealing!

Kaka, but Totti and Ibra should be in the top 5 aswell, and won't be.

Totti has been in insane form for well over a year now and Ibra is, we he's Ibra.

    golden boot anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

    Kaka,Totti,Messi,Ronaldo.

between those for top 3, reckon Totti will probably lose out, from wat i've always kind of gathered he does not seem to be very popular in the football world, certainly isnt a FIFA pin up like the other 3.

Probably because he has spat, stamped or dived against most of his opponents... :D

totti is far from a serial diver.

Ronaldo is the darling of the premier league but the lads goes down quicker than a thai hooker on a fat dutch man with a fiver.

    I'll give ya the spitting.

Can't think of any totti stamping moments though...

He has been immense for the last 3 years though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

he stamped on someone with two feet in that game that was abandoned when the coin was thrown from the crowd didnt he?

    edit: link to said incident....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFuOWX0Jk2Y

    I stand corrected.

From the top 5 names mentioned ie. Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo, Totti and Drogba, how many would you consider to be "honest" and noble players? Kaka seems to be the only one who would be considered, using the moral compasses and self-righteousness of some of the posters here. And that's only because I can't think of any such incidents involving Kaka off-hand.

TBVFH I don't really care about a players moral centre.
If someone has the ability to be considered one of the best in the world that is the most important thing.

Michael Schumacher was hardly a nice guy, still the greatest F1 driver of all time.

Why do soccer player have to be "nice guys"?

    It's total BS.

They don't, but if you compare two players with the exact same record, and one is Mr. Perfect and the other is someone who has spat at someone, obviously one is going to be held in higher regard.

    And rightly so.

There's a difference between "not being a nice guy" and "being a thatwordthatwouldgetmebannedagain".

Totti isn't even on the list...

Gabriel Marcotti was on Newstalk tonight and I completely agree with him. When the European Golden Boot winner can't even make the shortlist of 30 players and you see Thuram in there, well, it's a bit of a joke. A disgrace even. The Ballon d'Or is a far more prestigious award. This is the sort of list that Pele would come out with. In fact, I'm surpirsed there's no female players on there!

I'd have Kaka, Ruud and Messi.

Totti should definitly be on that list. European golden boot winner ommited is disgraceful.

I usually avoid posting in topics like this as it just becomes a list of peoples top 3's which are usually identical to each other however that C4 article has hit the nail on the head IMO although written from the Seria A perspective. What exactley have Henry, Gerrard ect done in the past 12months to make them options for world player of the year meanwhile the European golden boot winner (Totti) doesent even make the list.

i think the people who select these noinations or how they are made needs to really be reconsiderd. However for this year here is my list and i think that No.1 is widelly accepted/expected to be Kaka and honourable mentions to go to Drogba and Ronlado while Messi will be the early favourite for next year.

When was this "shortlist" introduced? Only recently I'm guessing. Players and managers used to be able to vote for whoever they wanted. Who actually decides on the list?

    AFAIK
    they still are
players and managers vote thier top 3 every person that receives a vote is on the "shortlist" they then have a second round of voting to decide the winner

I would be shocked if the European golden boot winner didnt recieve a single vote in the first round?!?!?!?

The lists of 30 male and 26 female candidates for these prestigious awards have been drawn up by football experts from the Technical and Development Committee, the Football Committee, the Committee for Women's Football and the FIFA Women's World Cup as well as women's football specialists on other FIFA committees

Managers and captains nominate their top 3 from the list of 30.
