    This time in Cleveland...

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/world/mhmhkfojgbcw/

"US police officers have been seen running into a Cleveland high school where a suspected shooter is a 14-year-old student who was apparently upset about a suspension.

There are unconfirmed reports that two victims are both male teachers at the school.

The shootings reportedly took place on the 3rd and 4th floor. It is unclear at this time whether the gunman is in custody.

There are unconfirmed reports that students and teachers are hiding and taking cover inside the building."

Sky News are reporting that at least 3 people have been shot (don't know if they're dead).

The bloke walked in with 2 guns and opened fire. They also say the shooter is dead.

That's crazy. They're saying on sky that he was in a fight at school earlier in the week and this was his first day back. :(

There will probably be another school shooting within the next 2 months. These are happening so regularly now the shock factor is gone.

nothing politicians can do will really. it's the general American psyche it seems that causes the problem, simple law changes wont do anything. and regardless the democrats are still too conservative to do anything about it that might be effective as it would probably require some fundamental upheaval.

Yea its just a hope, the chances are slim. Fundamental upheaval FTW!

I blame Marylin Manson, Sex in advertising and Internet chatrooms like these.

If there were more violence on American Tv's, they wouldnt have this problem.

    Anyway, upset about a suspension?

    I was always delighted.

Did anyone see that video on YouTube for that gunstore in the US? There is a link to it on Rick O Sheas 2fm page. Its an ad for store where you can rent cheap guns. Near the end the owner says something like "IM NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY, I JUST LOVE SHOOTING GUNS!". Its hard to believe that ad is real, and its seems so tragic, a symbol of the horrible gun culture in the US today.

In the interests of clarity and just in case anyone thought different, the guns are for hire to use on the premises in their own indoor range; NOT for taking away to 'shoot something' and bring back when finished.

    Well, let's see.

Illegal for a 14-year-old to own firearms. Check.
Illegal to bring firearms to school. Check.
Illegal to shoot at people. Check.

Gotta love these laws designed to stop school shootings.

I'm not, however, particularly surprised that those of the 'Only police should carry guns' opinion didn't mention the cop who killed six this week. One would have thought that would be more newsworthy than a student who didn't manage to kill anyone.

Hmm.. I don't know about that. I would need to look up Utah's laws on if its Castle Doctrine applied to property (Such as Texas) or only within the confines of the house (such as California). Even if in California, you probably could make a good 'reasonable fear for your life' argument.

Of course, she would also need NFA permits for the assault rifle and silencer.

1: No sidearms available to public, nothing but non-auto rifles.
2: No gun licence without a solid steel gun safe.
3: No guns for standard cops.

    I think these would help.

I see on the news some teenager was arrested and cops found lots of weapons in his bedroom. Seems he was preparing for a Columbine style attack. The amount of weapons this child had in his posession is shocking.

I agree, perhaps the Gunmen of America could get together and come up with a theme or design for the shootings so as to help them hit home more.

I just keep thinking of the lyrics from the song "Teenagers":
"The boys and girls in the clique
The awful names that they stick
You’re never gonna fit in much, kid
But if you’re troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did."

Seems to about sum it up with most of these school shootings, people getting peeved over how they are treated and then going postal (should postal not be changed to schoolkid at this point, been many years since I've heard of a mail worker shooting up the place?).

The weapons found included a 9 mm assault rifle that the teenager's mother had recently bought for him, Castor said. Police also found about 30 air-powered guns, plus swords, knives, hand grenades, a bomb-making book, videos of the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and violence-filled notebooks. The weapons were plainly visible in the boy's bedroom, Castor said.

Do Americans see anything wrong here?

Air powered guns as in air propells bullet? Or air propells BB?

Air cannot propel a bullet, only a pellet or a ball bearing (or a plastic ball, in the above case).

As with the Columbine event way back when, the kid probably already had deep psychological issues, as attested by the paraphernalia found in his bedroom.

Whatever happened at the school before the shooting was just a catalyst.

Yes. No such thing as a 9mm assault rifle, for starters. It requires an intermediate-power cartridge like a 5.56mm, plus full-auto capability. This was a pistol-calibre semi-automatic carbine. Still quite lethal at close range, but I do hate it when people pick the scariest possible term regardless of accuracy.

I'm also fairly sure that there are laws against the average 14-year-old posessing hand grenades. I'm not even sure where you'd buy one, maybe Wyk knows.

There is definitely a failure in parenting here, possibly in education.

The attitude to guns in America is ridiculous. We were having a debate about whether guns should be legal in my course, which consists of 19 people, 2 of them american, and everyone opposed the legalisation of guns except the americans, both of whom would consider themselves to be liberals.

Their logic is that you need guns for protection, like if someone were to attack you in some way, bank robbery or whatever, and they thought the availability of guns had nothing to do with the frequency of shootings, that the gun would be replaced by a knife instead, even though you can do so much more damage with a gun and a gun makes people feel more powerful than they are, giving them a further surge to be violent.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,502 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

both of whom would consider themselves to be liberals.

What's wrong with that? Isn't the idea of liberalism that one should be free to do what one wishes? If someone wants an abortion, let them. If someone wants to have homosexual relations, let them. If someone wants to speak freely, let them. If someone wants to smoke a joint, let them.

Why, all of a sudden, should a liberal reverse course on that one issue of "If you want a firearm to defend yourself... Tough!"

A man having sex with another man never killed anyone.

I was mentioning it because generally speaking you'd imagine Americans with pro-gun stances to be traditionally of 'conservative' opinions, not of 'liberal' political mindsets. What you say is true, but these people were actively in support of the legalization and usage of guns, not passively being open-minded to guns and thinking 'they're ok for some, not for others'.

Its the all powerful Gun lobby in the US who refuse to grow up and stick doggedly to the right to bear arms .They still think they are in the wild west.No wonder young people use guns as they are readily available to carry out some confused revenge with deadly effect. Why the media bothers to report it in the US ,surprises me as they are common place and to be expected .

Well, I've been away from Ireland for about 2 years now Stateside attending university and I've been looking for that "thing" called the "general American psyche." Anyone know where I can find one? Are they furry things like you find on a Critter film? Or do they disguise themselves when they visit Dub to where you cannot tell them apart from others walking down the street?

Like this only happens in America, there must be at least 5 school shootings a year! But I can only blame Americans for this, like there is no place were there's no guns in America. More guns there than people and thats a fact! But ffs, they sell guns and ammo in supermarkets! Wall*Mart is to blame, hicks are to blame, fuckin' everywere that sells gun are to blame! Think about it... if there are no guns, no one would be shot.

I find it quite convenient. Wanted to do a spot of shooting last time I was in Vegas. For whatever reason, I had no ammo, and instead of trying to hunt around for a specialist shop in an unfamiliar town, I just swung by a WalMart I found by the freeway. As long as all the relevant laws are followed, what does it matter if the shop is a specialist store or a general goods store?
