Basic gardening...setting a lawn...

...just had a big pile of earth taken from the back of the house and dumped in front to give some sense of a level area (house on a steep slope). Anyway, drains and topsoil going in today and then its up to me. I guess its just a question of getting the wife, picking stones, raking the soil and firing out seed and fertiliser, but are there any tips or dos and donts? Any machinery needed?
