Dell battery issue

I've had a dell Inspiron 6400 laptop for just over a year, the performance of the battery deterioated quite a bit over the last 6 months and recently I'm getting a flashing red battery light which basically means the battery needs to be replaced, it only lasts for about 40 minutes now.
