Houses in northern Spain, possible?

    Hi,

    I have been living in Ireland the last two years, and I was really shocked about the property market impact in this society, even bigger than in Spain, where I come from. One of the things that shocked me more is the continuous TV shows about buying properties abroad, refurbishing properties to make them more appealing, etc. however, if I am not wrong most of these shows are british.

    I'm not a property market professional (neither amateur), I work in other sector, but for me it was not very hard to realise that the properties that you can see in these programs, or the properties that you can see in any company in Dublin selling overseas properties are really crap (e.g. http://www.marinador.com/ , www.polarisworldpropertyresales.com ).

    To be honest, no one in Spain with common sense would buy a house in the places that these property sellers try to sell to Irish people. The construction materials are pure rubbish, the real estates use to be desert because you are buying a house in a holidays spot and additionally there are now plenty of scams and you could be buying an illegally built house. Anyways, I don't think I am telling you nothing that you don't know already.

    So, I am wondering why people do not go to the north of Spain to get their retirment/holidays house? Do you think there is market for someone that knows that market to become a property agent?

    My points here are: You can find massive houses for the prices you would pay in eastern/southern Spain, the construction materials are far better as these houses are not for tourists, you can really enjoy the Spanish lifestyle (if that is what you want), the temperature is more pleasant than in the south (say 5-10 degrees greater than in Ireland in average). The drawbacks are that you will hardly find any expats there, if you like swimming the water is cold (as cold as here in some places) and you can have lot of rain as well.

    Churrusco2's post would indicate there is a shortage of buyers in Spain right now. All the indicators are that Spain is in the midst of a house price crash just like we are.

    Well, I don't see the relation between my post and Spanish shortage of buyers. Those houses have always been there but traditionally the british/irish buyers have always been aiming to the Spanish sun-side. So I just wanted to poll opinions about if people would really buy in such not-so-sunny place.

    However, everything you say is basically true. The same thing that we are seeing currently in Ireland is happening in Spain, and prices are going down. Many big property franchises have closed lots of offices and the future does not look very well for the next year. There are rumours of about at least three saving banks that have asked for financial help and the general feeling is fear.

    Anyways, you have to bear in mind that Spain is very big and the crisis is not the same in all the areas. I bet you that you will see financial scandals (there has been some already) the next year in south/east sides that is were the huge developments are being built. I would say the northern areas are pretty safe for investment, specially towns in which you can still found very good bargains.

    Said this, I would always prefer to build my own house or rebuild an old one.

    Note that links between Ireland and the north of Spain aren't the best.

    From Dublin Only
    * Aer Lingus - Santiago De Compostela (Tuesday and Saturday) & Bilboa (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday)
    * Ryanair - Vitoria (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

    Otherwise you are talking Madrid, Oporto in Portugal or Biarritz in France. Hundreds of km away.
