Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So i know all the talk will about the final but some people might forget that there is also a 3rd place to be played.

So who do you think will win?

I think it ll end up France getting pay back on Argentina. Pumas have no gas left and i doubt there will be much passion left to get another victory. I hope im proven wrong

France definatly, Argentina had their big game, they caught france on the hop , wouldn't be suprised to see a big score.

    Does it really matter.

Who here can remember the results of previous third place play offs (without looking it up)

New Zealand destroying France in 2003 was a great free flowing match

Any reason to watch top class rugby on the box matters to me :)

i think Pichot summed it up, theres only 2 teams left in the WC -- how true !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭remus808

Yeah, Pichot - "Our world cup is over"

I think the 3rd place playoff is a demoralising affair and should be abolished. However I'd love to see France and Arg give it their absolute all, but I dont think we'll see anything closer than that. Comprehensive, clinical french victory i'm guessing.

Woo hoo a match for third place in the WC. That has to be the equivalent of coming last in a three person race and saying "well at least I get bronze."

the 3rd place play off should be scrapped, its not fair on the players to get them to play in this nothing match, i'm sure they just wanna go home

prediction-who ever wants its least will lose:cool:

Agree, their is no satisfaction gained from coming 3rd in a rugby world cup.

No doubt, a total waste of time and energy. Also dangerous for already exhausted players whose commitment levels will be understandably low. Scrap it and decide it on points difference or tries scored...

yeah it's a total load of pants, I can only imagine the stuffed shirt that dreamed it up - gob****e

and yet it is important with regards the seeding at the next world cup.

On the contrary, and that why it is played - its a money spinner the IRB just cannot overlook. Even though from a sporting point of view it is meaningless.

I feel bad for the argies. trying to psyche yurself for that match is going to be really hard. After feeling so destroyed after losing the semi-final. as the other poster said. purely a money spinner.

The match may be a nothing match, but the revenue it brings in is far from being nothing, think of what 60,000-80,000 fans have paid for tickets plus advertising and tv rights for the match and I'm sure you are talking about well over a million Euro.

If anyone wants to know why there is a third place playoff, then this is probably the reason and with that much cash on offer, the IRB would be very reluctant to get rid of the third placed playoff, especially since it always involves the big rugby playing nations.

the only 3rd place play off i remember was the one in 1987 when wales beat australia , i was in single digits but remember it none the less

Be interesting to see attendance/viewing figures for the game.

snapped the Pumas at 5/1 before kick off.

Tis a good game so far, but I'd expect a French backlash.

You gotta admire Argentina's defence its really fantastic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,483 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,483 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

For a game that supposedly means nothing, these players are certainly taking it seriously.

Probably the most intensive 3rd/4th place playoff I've ever seen, in any sport.

You can tell it means a lot to both teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,483 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

This is why there is a 3/4th playoff, it can be bloody good rugby and entertainment!

You'd swear it was a final the way these teams are taking it haha. Think Ibanez wants to go out Zidane style

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,483 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Great stuff, can't wait for the second half, bad tempered, hard hitting, great rugby :)

I think the game is a bit of a mare to ref to be honest. For two teams that are playing a match that apparently doesnt matter..erm..I don't think they read the script!

I'm really enjoying the honest passion of it all. These are 15 guys against 15 guys wearing their countries jerseys and giving it their all, hugely admirable stuff.

Great play from argentina at the end of the half, even if they are slowing the game done. France should have scored with that maul they had going

14 men down and they still manage to score from their own 5 meter line. Pure class they deserve to be higher the 3rd in the world rankings
