Seems a bit odd, I wouldn't have thought there'd be enough elite females to warrant a start all to themselves.
I wish they'd do a filtered starting position like most large marathons rather than a free for all at the start.

It's probably done so that the elite women finish close to the elite men. In the past the first woman home has been lost in the men's field.

I remember one year a guy nearly pushed the lead woman off the course when she tried to pass him at the very end.
