I was having a lot of trouble with it yesterday, default gateway was down a lot.

Is IE working? Because messenger uses the settings you have in IE. If that is working try reinstalling msn - small file but may sort it.

In theory MSN doesn't use the campus router because it sends everything through the HTTP proxies. What could have happened is that the proxies are rejecting MSN messenger's requests.

I'm using MSN on both a windows PC and macbook on the staff wired network and there is no problem - because I have direct outbound access. Which means that there's a spanner in the proxy setup somewhere.

Jusy use ebuddy.com its way better than web messenger, its not 100% as good but its less stress.

MSN uses the IE proxy settings. I don't know how it interacts with the auto-proxy configuration, but have you tried entering the details manually? In IE settings, try "Manual Proxy Configuration", and enter: proxy.ucd.ie, port 8484 . Then restart MSN.
