its a Fourm where you can post a thread about anything at all ie: crazy guy at houston station thread..
Just the way it should be:)

Is it necessary to close all these threads?

    Bertie

Why is the world going insane?

Anyone going hunting St Patricks Day

They seem like fairly typical AH fodder from what I've seen.
Also, they were just closed but not moved, but nesf said to 'take to 'x' forum', should the thread be moved if it really belongs in a different forum?

We can post youtube videos in their full glory, but we're unable to post pictures?

Imo, Lolcats and other funny pictures would be a good addition to any AH thread.

We don't like moving threads after they've been truly graced with the touch of AH. Members of the forum where it's moved don't like it either. So, no; they should be locked instead of moved.
Also, in general, it's less effort to lock than it is to move and it seems to drill the point home to people better.

YouTube censors material that is unsuitable for minors.
We get a bit of porn spam from time to time - we clean it away quickly; in the meantime which do you think is worse? Clicking on a thread and seeing and ignoring a ton of spammy links or seeing a bunch of in-line images? The images also appear to be hosted on boards.ie servers to many observers.
LOLCats are amusing for a while, then it becomes tedious. They're not worth dealing with the risks.

Because they have different charters to AH and some of the material in the threads might violate these charters and moving them instead of locking creates a headache for the mods of that forum, which is something I wish to avoid.

The sad fact is that too many people abuse it and ruin it for the rest of us.

Throw code on for a week and then ask your significant other how many reported posts there are in AH. We would all like to see it, but there are too many **** ready to ruin it. youtube censor their own stuff.

As a case and point think of all the hilarious RickRolling links/videos we already have to clean up.

I think one of the things that got me the mod gig in the first place was my vigilance .
I was always reporting posts that were either of the rickrolling variety, or were virus laden.

I can remember a few nights when we only had yourself and Giblet active, but AFK and I would leave a message for others warning them not to click links.

If we had code enabld, then we would definitel;y see more goatse type crap being posted. It really is sad that we have to disab;leimage code because of one or two sad bastards, who have nothing better to do than jack off to other people looking at sick porn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

Yeah I agree, didn't really think out the sad f*cks who'll go posting goatse type crap, it's just on another forum I use in the off topic forums image posting is allowed and there's been some absolutely epic threads as a result of it, really hilarious stuff, but I could definitely see a few posters on AH going overboard and ruining it for the rest of us.

There's already been enough problems with sig porn etc. It wouldn't be worth it.

Images may still be posted, just not embedded. It does take from the fun somewhat, but it's the best all 'round.

    There's always umm...
    Damn drink.
Uh. That Hagar and Rabies one.

    But, yeah.
Always the same **** who keep re-regging and screwing the place up.

Hey, cúnts! you won. img code is still off. Well done. now go away.

Edit: I did unban a guy who went overboard with thelinks.
He was given an infraction instead of the permanent ban because he wasn't really the bad anyway.

not a prescedent. Just part of an amnesty.

    So, thoughts on Dudess?

Personally I think she's doing a grand job.

Most people can't see the behind the scenes stuff, like the reported posts and stuff, but I can see that she is reading them, getting a few tips from the other AH mods and just doing her own thing (which is fairly essential in an AH mod. All AH mods work in a different way, but they all respect each other and things end up working out well in the end).

A lot of people prefer a mod who just comes along, does their thing and then vanishes without saying anything.
There are a couple of AH mods who work that way and it works well for them and others.
I always preferred the hands on approach and I think Dudess will work in this way (although, maybe to a lesser extent than I did).

To summarise, I think she's doing a fine job and dserves recognition for it (I saw a couple of peopl throwing compliments her way on another thread the other day, and that's what AH is all about. Pleasing the majority of the people, because without the contributors, it would be nothing).

    Kudos to you, Dudess.

In saying that, I'm stuck at home at the moment and am regretting quitting so soon. Almost a month of various illnesses have really pissed me off and I miss the muppetcheck function and the little boxes beside the posts and threads.

Dudess is doing a bang up job I'm sure but one thing I've noticed in your absence is an increase in tolerance of "Yore ma" posts (maybe there's just been an increase in tolerance fullstop!).

The thing about "Yore ma" posts is not only is it the original offender that's involved but inevitably someone will quote them saying "beat me to it", and then "I lol'd", followed by "glad somebody got it out of the way" and so on until a fifth of the first page of a thread is littered with "Yore ma"-esque posts.

I didn't want to report such threads as I figured this was a Terry only rule and none of the other mods cared. Just wondering if this is just an adjustment period or the dawn of a new era?

Yeah shes doing a great job. I thought she was a good choice when you picked her anyway. Her posts are always on subject unlike my own :) . I was upset that you didn't even reply to my little app ;) , is it my use of the word growler Terry or my inexperience?

The "yore ma" 'rule' is a particularly tough one to enforce. We don't want to overmoderate the place and for every one person that detests it, there are 10 that will tell you to **** off and stop being a nazi. Please report "yore ma" posts that are completely out of context, or if you notice the same user posting it a few times - this is where I draw the line.
Never be afraid to report a post - if it's borderline or something, I try to give you feedback/discuss it.

As for Dudess: Too ****ing soft. Not in the nice, girly squidgy way neiether. boo!

    How do I like AH?

I like it now more than ever (bar the lose of Mr.T obviously).

It might seems liek I dont use AH much but I do read it all the time. I dont post much because most of the stuff I would say would get me banned - and rightly so. If the stuff I wanted to say was allowed the this place would suck.

I've been banned twice from here and each times I got a PM from the relevant mod and no sign of a Feedback thread from me.

Dudess is a bit "nice" but I dont see that lasting long. She's not Terry and people shouldnt expect her to be. That said she should try posting drunk, maybe this weekend?

    Swarthy maybe. Buxom never.

6th: Yep, you're right. This niceness won't last long. I'm only modding two and a half weeks.

As for drunken modding: I've done drunken posting all right and find I give out too much information about myself - e.g. how "buxom" I am.

Dudess is doing a stand up job, exactly what I wanted.

As for all these posts saying she is 'too nice', dont worry. She can stay as nice as whe wants. Id rather she stayed nice. Her role is not to be 'un-nice', its to make sure this forum runs, and its certainly not a popularity contest.

I want moderators who are part of this forum, who take an interest in what happens here. I dont want moderators who feel the need to be 'not nice'. Its a community forum, not a concentration camp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    I agree with you completely.

When looking for my replacement, I know that you were not looking for someone who was the same as me.

I had my way of doing things and Dudess has hers.

There are some things I would do differently to her, but I'm not her and she is not me.

Dudess is doing things her way and I haven't seen one complaint so far.
In some people's eyes, that may be a bad thing though :) .

The way it is is that each AH mod is dofferent and all do things their own way. It works well.
There isn't any consistency between mods, but there isn't any consistency between contributors to this forum.

Some asked earler if I had any regrets quitting.
    I only have one.
    I quit too soon.

It was a long time coming, but had I known that I was going to get sick a couple of days after my modship was taken away, I wouldn't have handed in my notice so soon.
I've been sick with various things since. This current one must be the last one. I can't possibly get anything else.
