I'm in the market to replace my old Punto and I want a saloon-sized car with a maximum engine size of 1600cc approx.

I have 5-6k Euro to spend and I want a solid saloon, with a bit of power to it. Something that is comfortable to drive as I regularly travel from Dublin to Cork and Waterford. I want something with a bit of style as well, if possible. Mileage and age are not a concern if I can get the right car with the right history at the right price.

I've seen VW Boras and Passats, as well as late 90s BMW 316. I'm open to all suggestions, so please feel free.

A Ford Fiesta or Focus would be a good bet. They're very comfy for long trips and cost little to run.

The BMW 316i is well slow so avoid. If you could push the engine size a little, Id go for a 1.8 Ford Mondeo Mrk 2 (125bhp). All the mags I have raved about it. I know they are ten a penny, but TG magazine voted it car of the year 2001. I recently saw one on carzone, 2001, 60k mileages with warranty for just over 6.5K euro.

Id be going for something like this:

You're in no mans land there OP. 6k is a lot for a old car that you're probably going to cripple with mileage. If you spent more, it would be a better proposition for resale/ depreciation etc but if I were in your position, I'd go for something like this and drive it into the ground....

I reckon that I won't be buying another car for another 2 years or so, and therefore I'm not really concerned about depreciation.

I like the suggestion of the Mrk2 Mondeo, hadn't really looked at Fords. I reckon that I could stretch another grand or so, if that gives anyone more scope in their suggestions.
