    Man charged with Riedo murder

A 27-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Galway charged with the murder of the 17-year-old Swiss student, Manuela Riedo.

Gerald Barry of 187 Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Galway, was charged with murdering Ms Riedo at Loughatalia, Renmore, on 8 October.

Free legal aid was granted and Judge Mary Fahy remanded the accused in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear again at a sitting of the District Court at Harristown House on 26 October.

A second man who was being held at Galway Garda station was released without charge.

Ms Riedo's funeral will take place in her home village, Hinterkappelen, near Bern in Switzerland later today.

Flags including the Swiss flag will fly at half mast at Galway city hall today as a sign of respect for Ms Reido.

A post mortem examination found that the 17-year-old language student, who had been staying in Renmore for only two days, had been strangled.

The Irish ambassador to Switzerland, James Sharkey, will represent the Government at today's service while the Mayor of Galway, Tom Costello, will also attend.

In Galway, after numerous arrests and searches on wasteland and in Loughatalia yesterday the garda investigation into the murder Ms Riedo is now at a crucial stage.

Last night a 26-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were released without charge from garda stations in Gort and Loughrea.

A file is now to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

As the investigation continued 700 people turned out last night in Renmore to pray for the family of the Swiss girl.
