On Board Computer

I have a BMW 318 1999 E46 and have a problem with the on board computer. When i press the BC button on the indicator stalk nothing happens. I can still change the deisplay on the dash using the trip buttons when i turn the ignition on but after a few seconds all that does is change the temp reading from C to F. Any ideas?
