you probably could but it would cost far more than getting it as an optional extra.

you'll probably only use it twice a year anyway:rolleyes:

Does it have to be a Corolla?

There are far better machines out there(IMO) than a Corolla. It is not even that cheap these days. If you want a Corolla with air conditioning you will have to get a Luna version it will costs €23070. A VW Jetta has it as standard throughout the range. It is a bit dearer though.

A Focus Zetec has chilled air, a Mazda 3 saloon has it as standard as long as you don't buy the Comfort model.
A Zetec Focus 1.6(1.4 is also available, but it has a lot less power than the Corolla, so it will be very weak) saloon costs €23,795. A 1.4 costs €22,985.

See here and here. Note however that the Focus is about to get a facelift, so it would be wise to wait till the facelifted model arrives(which will be very shortly).

A Mazda 3 1.6 Comfort SE is €21,995. The Mazda and Ford are despite appearances quite similar underneath. The use the same chassis, and some of the engines are shared too.

A 1.4 in a car of this size is a bad choice IMO. The Corolla is believe it or not a bigger car than an Avensis from only 5 years ago. The Avensis was(and still is) widely considered to be weak in a 1.6. The Corolla weighs more than the bigger Avensis. It takes 13 seconds to hit 100 km/h. A diesel would be a far superior engine(in the Corolla, no 1.6 optoin in the Corolla unfortunatly), even though it has a slight disadvantage in the bhp department and takes longer to hit 100 km/h.

Of course, what might be a very good idea is to sit back and wait and see what will happen with the VRT re balancing. It is supposedly going to meanm that cars will get taxed on emissions. So then there will be no excuse at all for going for a 1.4 petrol(at the moment 1.4s at at a lower VRT band than 1.6s, which makes them cheaper to buy).

@land9 Air conditioning is an incredibly useful thing all yearround, but especially at winter time oddly enough. It defogs windows infinately quicker than the old fashioned way of putting on the fan to full blast and turning the heat up to max as well.

It prevents the car from getting stuffy at winter time, because you don't need to have the fan on at high speeds and the heaters turned on so that you can see where you are going. It defogs a fully fogged up car very quickly as in at most 20 seconds and if left on will hugely reduce the chances of the car refogging up.

The benefits of air conditioning are well kown in the summer, and most people tend to assume that it is only good for hot weather.
