Somebody please think of the feet!

    Hello all!

    I (like many of you as it seems) am running my first marathon next week. I just have one or two questions for the veterans on the board. I recently bought a new pair of asics as my other ones were not designed for long distances. After my first run in them (13 miles) I arrived home to the nice suprise of blood soaked socks.

    I know they are new and they are in my right size but my question is.... is there any methods to help break them in any faster? Also, are those inserts I have seen in footlocker/lifestyle and good?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated and best of luck to all those taking part! Lets hope it doesn't piss rain!!

    Could you not get use your old runners until after the marathon?
    Kinda late now to be using new runners.

    Tbh, I'd take them back as not fit for purpose. Maybe there's no chance of a refund but worth a shot.

    Then get thee to a specialist store that can take measurments and advise you properly.
    This is the only one I know of, I'm sure there are others. Better than taking advise from some spotty teenager in Lifestyle/Champion Sports.

    But even if you get the perfect runners tomorrow, this is all very last minute for the marathon.

    Oh crap, its a shocked face!!

    Well I've made my bed and I have to deal with it. Cant really afford new runners tbh as the ones I got were pricey enough. I'll just have to shut up and put up as there is no way I'm backing down from this. Thanks alot for your imput anyhow.

    Its all about damage limitation now so would you recommend insoles or 2 pairs of socks? Also I've been wearing the runners for the last few days and they are feeling more comfortable. Im going out on a 7 mile run later today so I'll gauge the feel of them then.

    I cannot stress strongly enough that it is the wrong thing to do to wear the new trainers on race day. If you do you may well not finish and might leave yourself unable to run for a considerable period of time. In the apocolyptic scenario you might even do serious damage to your feet or joints (if they are not supportive enough, etc).

    Run teh race in your old trainers - they've taken you through your long runs they'll take you through one more.

    As a matter of interest what sort of Asics are they and where did you get them? Were they properly fitted? And what are your old trainers?

    what sort of socks are you using? If they are regular sport socks consider getting specific running socks and to save spending more cash have a look at the socks aldi had in on special last Thursday. I've been using their socks all year and my feet only get sore on the 15+ mile runs. And was able to get around this by putting a bit of vaseline on the toes. Will be doing it next monday for the 1st time aswell, best of luck to you with it.

    The old ones are shot. They're a cross country runner designed for limited distances. The runners weren't fitted but I was sized up for them. I reckon my best bet is to bandage potentially affected areas massively, vaseline everywhere to hell and pray! The new runners are Asics 2120s. They are getting substantially more comfortable as I havent taken then off in a few days.

    In regards to socks, Im just using cotton sport socks.

    Hey There,

    Can't really add to much to the advice you've been given. It really is a bit late to be getting new shoes, whereabouts are you getting the blisters on your foot? If you've getting bad blisters on the arch of your foot, this is probabaly due to a poor fitting shoe. There is a lot of support in the 2120 that you may not need.

    If the blisters are on your toes it may not be as bad you could just fix this with proper technical running socks. Cotton is about the worst thing you can put on your feet it holds water very well think about cotton t-shirts and how they hold the water in the wet.

    Best of luck in the marathon you do still have a bit of time to break them in and if they're feeling a little better now maybe in a weeks time they won't be so bad.
