Can you do the driving test over here with an automatic transmission car?

Yeah but you are only licenced to drive an automatic car and have to sit the test again to drive a car with gears

yes you can but if you pass you're test in an automatic you only get a full licence for driving automatic cars. if you pass with manual gears you can drive both.

Yes, if you pass the test in a car with an automatic gearbox your Certificate of Competency will reflect this and you may only apply for a restricted full licence. The number '78' will be stamped on the licence to indicate to a Garda etc. that the driver is restricted to autos.

The automatic rule applies to any vehicle, not just cars, hence the reason why drivers, such as those with Dublin Bus/Bus Eireann, would have difficulty transferring to a private operator with manual vehicles.

Not really related to test but OT, are there any particular safety or driving issues relating to driving an automatic that you might not be aware of from only driving a manual?
I want to advise someone who will be hiring an automatic.
I have driven automatics and all that immediately comes to mind is an occasional desire to press a non existent clutch as you brake to a stop.

Not particularly but they require more braking than a manual and, depending on the model, some do not allow one to limit the car to a particular gear. Not really necessary in normal driving but useful if making a steep decent while towing a trailer.

If anything though, they are safer than manuals.

EDIT: and of course, they can't be run started if battery is flat! ;)
