You can start trading straight away as a sole trader under your own name. If you want to trade under a different name then you must register it at Dublin Castle which doesn't cost too much AFAIK. Note, as a sole-trader, you have unlimited liability for the losses of the business.

You need to do some research check here for a starting point

trading above relates to trading ie being in business, so you would be trading as a designer, selling your design service.

    Hi alinonee,

I would suggest you do 3 things......Research, Research & more Research before you take the plunge.

Your opening statement just screams of "trouble". Maybe some of these sites can help you.

Also, I would strongly recommend you have a chat with the guys at Enterprise Ireland, they are very helpfull and you may be suitable for a "Feasibility Grant". I was approved for one when I started out and let me tell you, it came in very handy ;)

    Best of luck :)

thank you all. research is what I'm doing : ) all above links are very helpful. Initially it will be only evening/weekend thing.

‘’Your opening statement just screams of "trouble" – I feel this same way : ) and probably feasibility grant will not be an option : )

i already have a few jobs lined up but want to 'legalize' it first. they should pay for opening fees etc and if then i go bankrupt so be it. I still have my day job. I think its worth giving a shoot and see how its go.

thanks again and probably i will have more questions las i go through the links : )
