PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE
BATTLE OF THE AXE @ The Ha‘Penny Bridge Inn-Dublin’s Longest Running Open Mic Night
celebrates 11 years of Quality Musical and Comedy tradition with a Marathon 24 hour non-stop Extravaganza at The Tivoli Theatre, Francis St, Dublin, in aid of RTE PEOPLE IN NEED TELETHON‘07 from Midnight, Thursday, October 25th-Midnight, Friday, October 26th…

What do Irish Comedy Star David Mc Savage, Robbie Bonham (Winner of the 98 FM Dublins' Best Comedian award) and John Colleary (of TJ & TJ from Today FM) all have in common? Well, besides being young, Irish and considerably talented, ALL amongst many more began their performing careers at Dublin’s Tuesday Night Open-Mic event The Battle Of The Axe at The Ha’penny Bridge Inn by Dublin’s Famous Ha’penny Bridge. The club presents a weekly mix of music, comedy, poetry and even the occasional variety act… (Magicians or Ventriloquists, anyone!!??) Now celebrating 11 continuous years of quality shows at the venue, Master Of Ceremonies TONY FERNS is taking his unique show ‘on-the-road’ to raise money for the RTE PEOPLE IN NEED TELETHON ‘07... The event, a 24-hour non-stop exotic cabaret presented at Dublin’s Tivoli Theatre, Francis St in the heart of The Liberties will feature regular performers from the shows both old and new. ALL proceeds will be donated to the charity appeal and ALL performers have agreed to perform for free in support of this worthy cause.

The necessity of tight scheduling of the day-and-night-long marathon and the need to co-ordinate an entertaining and varied show means that the final line-up remains a close secret at this time, HOWEVER the organisers have been inundated with offers of support from current and past performers, other comedy & singer/songwriter clubs and a combination of new talent and veteran troopers is assured, including a competition called Smack-down @ 4am in the morning with16 comedians going head to head… As if all that wasn’t enough, the organisers are in talks with none other than The Guinness Book Of Records in an effort to enter the record books with this unique event… Here’s your chance to see a top-line variety show of musical and comedy talent while doing your bit for PEOPLE IN NEED TELETHON ‘07...

    Hiya,
maybe the 24 hours took a lot out of me but i definitely remember introducing Sean and Graham just after 2 o'clock, mentioning boards.ie as i had seen Sean rave about Graham's youtube vid earlier and it all seemed to come nicely together. Not that I was due to mc but I was there from 11-3 having popped home earlier to get some kip and it just came up.

Just in case you think I'm actually Orestes and he's going to get involved in some futurecrime i'll get pulled up for.

    Love the forum btw.

Not as confused as I was when Orestes said he was me, I know there's a discussion about people borrowing someone elses material but I always thought my own identity was safe :)

Enjoyed your set Sean, pity there weren't more people there but afternoon comedy's more something you'd see in Japan, the time difference.

Thanks. It was asick irony; the biggest venue Ive ever played but also the smallest crowd (5). Can't wait to tery out some of that new material to a bigger audience

I thought I introduced one of them, but I was a bit confused about the mentioning boards bit cos I didn't remember doing that I gotta admit. Did I not introduce Sean (very badly) after we were done playing charades? (I'm Gary Fay by the way, just to avoid more confusion)

ah Hiya Gary, Graham (Dowling) here. it's all these user names get me confused, haven't a notion either, I know I introduced Graham Duffy and mentioned boards after Kevin Goldsmith following Sean doing his set, thought you were the same nutter that stole my credit card details 2 years ago and charged a load of hentai porn dvds to it, tha paranoia of the anonymity of boards creeping in.
It was a really good event all things considered and fair play to you for being one of the few people who actually pulled an all-nighter into the wee small hours of Friday afternoon without fading. Talk real soon no doubt.

Ah right, everything falls into place so! Then again, like you said I was there all night and day so my version of events is probably nothing like what actually happened since I was so wrecked! Was an interesting event though! Cheers man!

yeah graham introduced me (the other graham....duffy) anyway...to clear it up, gary you shouted "sean get the f*ck on the stage" and graham in his infinite wisdom didnt think that was a nice intro so gave him another one!

i feel bad that when they went to record the.....em world record they had 92 people in the audience, they needed 100......missed out on entering the guiness book of world records by 8 feckin people.....harsh!

Went out 1st round to Neil Hickey, but it was close!

Good thing I didn't go through though, I'd forgotten most my material that I hadn't used in the 1st round!

Sorry about that, I'd been there for about twelve or thirteen hour at that point, was a wee bit cranky!

I went out in the first round of the Smackdown, got beaten by Kiearan Lawless, I never had a chance against the wee bugger though!

firstly: 13 hours? wow well done!!

ah yeah kierans a good man, he got my name wrong when i played the neptune tho...buty to be fair, my name is graham and he called me cathal...they are similar.....WAIT A MINUTE NO THEY'RE NOT!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,972 ✭✭✭orestes

It was sixteen or seventeen hours by the time I left, and I only left to go to the Neptune for the night. I must have a masochistic streak or something

Yeah I was there for that mix-up, he got you confused with Cathal Duffy, he's another comedian who gigs there quite regularly. Although you probably should hunt Lawless down and teach him the error of his ways (and get the talented little bugger out of the way and stop making the rest of us look bad!)

sounds like a plan, altho alot of his material is about how he is an incredibly skinny f*cker...and imagine if he battered me....now that would be bad!!

and the neptune the same night as the 24 hour gig night? one of the worst gigs i have ever had....f*ckin english b*stards and that loud mouth fella at the bar! ruined it all for me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,972 ✭✭✭orestes

I reckon the two of us could take him! He's only little after all! (Meet me under the bridge tonight at midnight, bring a shovel and wear black)

Ah I remember that crowd of English bastards, ****ed the entire night up for everyone, performers and the rest of the audience, fcukers! It was a shame really cos it's usually a great place to gig, I'm sure your next one there will go better though man

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,820 ✭✭✭grames_bond

hope so man, really do! i loved the first time i gigged there! hmm lets see, midnight sounds good......kieran doesnt go on this does he? coz this could give it away!!
