Question related to a 2nd had car I'm thinking of getting...

apparently the timing belt needs to be replaced - generally speaking how much does that cost and how easy/hard is it to tell if the engine has been damaged by it being broken?

Don't want to invest in a car that has a spent engine!

Don't buy unless it's been done. Get proof too. The engine will suffer a lot of damage if it goes, possibly fatal.

Cost varies for car to car. Depends how easy or otherwise it is to get to the belt.

What type of car is it? Is it petrol or diesel?

Typically 250 euro for an average petrol car (any more is too much). Some engines will not be damaged if the belt breaks. eg a lot of Toyotas, VWs etc
