That's some breaker's yard in the background. There are a good few not your average run of mill cars sitting there.

It's mostly MINIs in the background, they're a MINI specialist breakers yard if I'm correct, there's one supposed to be in Bury.

Engine and gearbox are virtually new. Uprated too. Suspension, brakes, interior. All worth major coin.

I've no inkling what there are worth.

How about the "we don't have the keys bit". Strike anyone as odd?

no, if they were given it as a write off they likely wouldn't be given the keys.

"This car is sold by us as spares only, we must retain the bodyshell/chassis, however anything that unbolts or can be removed can be sold."

Anyone know why they "must retain the bodyshell/chassis"?
Is it something to do with the fact its a writeoff?

It's probably a category B write off, so it must be crushed, but parts can be removed. Once it's stripped it'll go in the crusher with an insurance rep there to witness it. This kind of thing should be brought in over here. Putting the onus on the buyer to twig that a car he's looking to buy has been crashed is unfair. In the UK if a car has been crashed and written off by the insurance company, there's a stamp in the log book to warn a future buyer. Cut 'n shut candidates are crushed altogether.

Category A: A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.
Category B: A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.
Category C: An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category D: A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category F: A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.
