Folks, anything even remotely disturbing should not be in-line(i.e. Do not use IMG tags) and should be marked NSFW with a brief description. Thank you.

    Apologies on img tags.
I work in an area where this would be considered research.

Some history on the picture -

Samuel Armas is the child who featured in a famous photograph by Michael Clancy as he seemed to grasp his surgeon's hand from a hole in his mother's uterus during open fetal surgery for spina bifida. The photograph was taken during a pioneering surgical procedure undertaken on August 19, 1999 to fix the spina bifida lesion of a 21-week-old fetus in the womb. The operation was performed by a surgical team at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. The team, Dr. Joseph Bruner and Dr. Noel Tulipan, had been developing a technique for correcting certain fetal problems in mid-pregnancy.

Sad how this was flagged NSFW but the death, suffering and human degradation depicted in previous pictures is fine.

a good guideline to go by is anything that depicts the inside of the body should be tagged NSFW.. car accidents, abortion protest pics, and that monstrousity.

Pioneering surgery is now a monstrousity? I hope you never need the intervention of mondern science.

Mordeth. keithers911 and anyone else: Take it to Humanities or PM, please.

jackpalance: Possibly, as dramatic and memorable as the photographic is, it doesn't really define history to us. (This isn't a judgement, just that we tend to limit out historical awareness and interests)

Don't be encouraging me :D Probably a good thing that guns aren't readily available in ireland. I've seen some extremely depressing things today connected to the way migrants and disabled people are treated in ireland. But that's a story for another day:eek:

    .

I've read that before actually, but there's no firm evidence of it either way.

Alot of the WWI photos depicting troops 'going over the top' are faked too.

Its said that the first casualty of war is the truth.

What makes this one particularly interesting is that the boy in question survived the holocaust. The German in the right of the picture was executed after the war.

As for the picture of the alleged einzatgruppen killing I can't find a link now but there was detailed studies and analysis of it which suggested that it was actually edited, and that the original picture did not even feature the mother and child.

The pictures of the IDF entering east jerusalem would fit under the category of defining history in anyones books as well as making a political statement. Protest posters/pictures only do the latter. No one will remember those pictures in ten years time, never mind fifty or two hundred years from now. On the other hand many pictures of palestinian suffering will be remembered.

It's a great thread, let's keep it on topic.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

peace has gotta come to palestine someday, there can't be that many nutbag israeli settlers. Maybe those pictures could take on the same relevance as photos from the vietnam protests, or the iraq protests. History is happening right now too.

The suffragettes did obtain a martyr at the Derby in June 1913. Emily Davison ran from the crowd and attempted to grab the reins of the king's horse, Anmer. She was trampled and died a few days later from her injuries.

The caption on the newspaper report at the time says: 'A remarkable picture, showing Anmer rolling over [jockey Herbert] Jones and Emily Davison in the act of falling.'

You can actually see the footage of the incident on youtube too.
