Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

and photos of israeli soldiers beginning their occupation of east jerusalem doesn't make a political statement?

The pictures of the IDF entering east jerusalem would fit under the category of defining history in anyones books as well as making a political statement. Protest posters/pictures only do the latter. No one will remember those pictures in ten years time, never mind fifty or two hundred years from now. On the other hand many pictures of palestinian suffering will be remembered.

It's a great thread, let's keep it on topic.

peace has gotta come to palestine someday, there can't be that many nutbag israeli settlers. Maybe those pictures could take on the same relevance as photos from the vietnam protests, or the iraq protests. History is happening right now too.

The suffragettes did obtain a martyr at the Derby in June 1913. Emily Davison ran from the crowd and attempted to grab the reins of the king's horse, Anmer. She was trampled and died a few days later from her injuries.

The caption on the newspaper report at the time says: 'A remarkable picture, showing Anmer rolling over [jockey Herbert] Jones and Emily Davison in the act of falling.'

You can actually see the footage of the incident on youtube too.

    Worlds first photography.
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce takes the first photography in 1826, through his window overlooking a backyard.

Is that a star destroyer in his back garden?

Oh ok, although I'm not quite sure what relevance it has to the thread title. Nice picture though.

The title of the thread is pictures that define history......... a picture of my ass would be relevent.

As for this picture, its historical relevence might not be as significant as the man landing on the moon and it might not be old, but in some ways the Green eyed afghan girl pictured in 1984 is particularly relevant.
It is the picture of a young girl in a refugee camp on the afghan / pakistan border during the russian occupation. This picture was not staged and I have not seen many pictures so haunting. The fact it took 20 years to locate her again is another story all together ( Burkha ).

I understand it means nothing to you but it makes me think about the last century and the mainly pointless conflicts that have blighted it but also the people it has effected.

You more than likely (me too!) have not tasted the brutality, but millions have. and this picture says a lot.

    Mark

I think its quite a fascinating picture tbh.
Her eyes are so amazing - a beautiful face. Yet beneath it all you know there is a harrowing story to be told...
    Thanks for posting that one.
