Can't put polo into gear

for a while now the odd time i put my polo (97, 1L) into reverse it gets stuck somewhere between 1st and reverse and cuts out. I then have to pull hard on the gearstick until it go back into neutral. Well this mornign the same thing happened except this time when i pulled on the gearstick it was as it it popped out of place. now the gearstick is very loose and the car is stuck in first gear. How serious is this? anyone know what is wrong?

AFAIK there is a repair kit for the mechanism at the base of the gear stick. Maybe this is what your Polo needs.
