Ok, I started on a .22lr semi auto cost €300 second hand. Scope and mounts were another €100 odd.
You will need gun club membership €150 to €300 per year or permission from 2 farmers (free :))
€38 per year for the rifle licence, renewable each August, so if you get your licence in the new year you will pay again in August.

    Hope that helps.

Edit: As regards ammo costs I am paying around €5 for 50 rounds.

You forgot ammo - .22 ammo is pretty cheap, you can prob get it for 5c a round or so.

    Depends on what you want to do;

    Target Shooting
Air Rifle - many target shooting clubs will have club rifles, so you just pay club membership. Ammo is less then 1c a round and its good fun.

.22 Rifle - many different types of .22 shooting, again clubs will have rifles and can go through it with you.

    Hunting
You will need to learn how to shoot first, so you should go to a range and learn the basics and safety proceedures.

I got a good .22lr with scope for €400 second hand, there are plenty of guns for around that range.

In that price range you could probably haggle for a good as new CZ ( like a new Skoda car, you won't find better for what you pay and you'll pay a lot more for worse if you want to ) or Marlin, the likes of Anschutz and Krico and so on will make a bigger dent in the wallet ....

CZ452 in varmint I think is the coolest of all the 452's
The Heavy Free Floating barrel is great!

If you want something cheap to run and if your interested
if entering competitions and for rabbits etc then .22LR maybe for you.
Ammos is about 4-5 Euros for 50rnds. the .22LR is probably
    best suited for 50-100m

If you dont mind NOT being able to enter competitions and you only
want to target shoot without the need for winning some medal or
competition then the .17HMR is a super round for accuracy and have heard its great for foxing. Its about 17-20 Euros a box of 50rnds and is good for 100-200m (200m on a very very mild day as wind will knock the round about the place)

Was shooting a few weeks ago at 50m where two mating flys happened
to wander across my bulls eye as I was squeezing the trigger and I think
I may have severed the male flys dinky off. I'm fairly new to shooting
and was getting consistent half inch groups or sometimes less at 50m with
    the hmr.

There's a club just startiing up there (Waterford) at the moment. I've only heard about it and have no details myself, but if you get on to Fermoy, they'll know the details as Kieran Barry is helping them set it up.

Pretty standard for most target shooting clubs.

I have found it totally unsuitable for foxes at anything over 80 yards.
