I was installing ubuntu there and I decided to check the memory out using the memtest86 option (v1.70) - I ran it on 3 systems - with some *BIG* differences.

    1st: Pentium D820 2.8Ghz 1Gb DDR2-533Mhz ram

Note the L1 & L2 cache speeds and the main memory speeds compared to say my old

    2nd: 512Mb (standard 70ns sdram) P3 850Mhz (coppermine) system.

Look at L1 cache difference - 19,533Mb/s compared to 8,331Mb/s over x2 the difference. But looking at main memory... a staggering 10 fold increase from 225Mb/s as opposed to the D920's 2598Mb/s. Wonder what today's ninja PCs memory can do compare to this cheap standard dell stock? Anyone want to try and test it out.

The difference is shocking! Anyone else mind checking out their system and post the results here? I'm sure it would be interesting.

Here is another one - this is a middle (bottom) range of the current Dell laptops
    3rd: a dual core (not a core2 duo) 1.6Ghz T2065.

50Gb/s potential transfer at L1 cache level. Damn, that's fast! :p

pwn'd :D maybe its just harder to get 4GB kits stable. The guys on the mushkin forums where telling me to increase some voltage values to stabilize mine, but I think increasing them is what borked my kit as I started getting BSODs.

If you manage to stabilize your kit in memtest, let me know what settings you had to change. I tried loosening my timings, increasing my SPP, FSB and DDR volts to no avail.
