Read it long time ago from the local library. I think it was a collection of short stories by one author, based around a children's hospital. Not a normal children's hospital, very strange mutanty children or children w/o brains and stuff. mostly the book was about the staff rather than the patients. i was reminded of it…

i was reminded of it when i read the wasp factory recently (the bit about the maggots and the smiling child).

i think the author's surname began w/ a letter between d and m, but no guarantees. and the word pedagogue was used far too often.
