Running a second display

I have a fairly old Acer laptop (1.73ghz Pentum, 1.5Gb ram, Intel 900GMA) that has a monitor port on the side.

I know it's no powerhouse, will be upgrading in the new year, but would a computer with those specs be able to comfortably run a second (larger/higher-res) monitor? (using music-editing software ie not graphically intense)?

I don't see why not. Running a second monitor doesn't need any horsepower - why, back in my day, I used to run a dual monitor setup with my trusty Thinkpad 600.
