if its illegal, Can anyone give me a link to where it says so.

    thanks

(i'd explain more ..but i'm afraid that this thread would be hi-jacked by the high horse brigade)

The below can be found at http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1992/en/si/0318.html

    3. ( a ) The plate on which an identification mark is exhibited (in this Schedule referred to as "the plate") shall not contain any words, letters, numbers, emblems or other marks of any kind other than those required under this Schedule.

but what if i have a clear(ish) pastic cover over my plate.

i still dont see anything in that link about that.. it only says taht it has to be the prescribed size/dimension, and that no other mark be placed on it

Precisely. No more effective than the old hairspray+clingfilm trick - e.g., not at all.

    work or not work...

    legality ???

I think if they really wanted to they could object under the first schedule part 9 of the Vehicle Registration and Taxation Regulations, 1992.

    9. The identification mark and placename shall be formed of black characters and shall be exhibited on white reflex reflective material so that the identification mark appears at all times from the front of the plate as black characters on a white background.

According to the citizensinformation link posted earlier (...and clearly visible at all times), they're illegal if they work, fine if they don't.;)

That myth has been busted. There was nothing that would work to hide your numbers.

The super protector does work, it uses prisms.

    the spray however doesn't.

I presume this would be handy for avoiding things like Tolls / Speed Cams LOL

I've no idea the legality of these but i'd guess no

    try www.foxplate.com ... James Bond Style :)

I saw they made one with the Privacy glass when you sent voltage to it it turns white

I know the one your talking about and its pretty ugly as well.

In fairness, by the time you flip down your reg plate, or turn it white, you will have been photographed by then!

Illegal, plate must be vertical or near vertical.

Pseudoscience doesn't justify something "working" when it quite clearly won't under most circumstances. What exactly do you think the retroreflective coating of a registration plate is made with to begin with? Prisms

Theres nothing that going to obscure a registration plate legally - as obscuring them is illegal to begin with.

Mythbusters fairly comprehensively showed that all of these yokes don't work a few months ago.

Also if a garda spotted it, they wouldn't take long in getting you to remove it.
Trying to mask your number plate is largely the same as using speed camera detectors - they aren't relaible enough to justify their existence. Being observant whilst on the road is much better (its worked for me for several years!)!

Some of them do work, no idea which, but was watching a UK traffic cop show and they showed the plate on the camera in the cop car while driving. Couldn't see a thing, needless to say they pulled over the driver and throw the book at them. Also with the UK now using the reg tracking system, can't remember what it's called, it all their patrol cars as soon as a reg comes up unreadable they pull the driver over. The Gardai will be getting this system soon;)

AFAIK the gardai have (in two IIRC) cars already!
